    Yes article submission,social bookmarking and directory submission acts as backlinks. There is no such rule which says 50 backlins per day. but build backlinks in natural ways without spamming, It will be okay.

    There isn't such a thing as too many links too fast. As someone said above try and get links from relevent sites.

    I truly think the best way to rise through the ranks as fast as possible are go for the best backlinks you can. Getting your link on the most relevant sites you can will help you a lot more then a backlink on a directory. I did this on one of my sites and it got listed into google after the first night of building backlinks

    One thing to think about is that google knows you cannot control who backlinks to you. For instance if you do a killer post and it goes viral on reddit or digg or your press release gets picked up by national media then you are going to get a ton of backlinks quickly and google will not penalize you for that. Also, if backlink counts mattered all you would have to do is totally spam and trash your competitors site with horrible links to drive them down. Google knows this and would not allow it.

    The key is for things to be natural and undetectable. Mix it up. Don't grow too fast and soon you will be there.
