i would prefer members that actually want to post stuff based on the topic than just get random inactive members :/

My primary promotion technique is video blogging on youtube. Over the past 27 months I have uploaded over 320 of my own home made videos. This sends my site a steady stream of targeted traffic.

To give you an idea, my youtube traffic bounce rate is 30% lower then google traffic.

But video promotion is not for everyone. Some people do not want to broadcast themselves all over the world.

Figure "who" your targeted group is, "Where" they are at and "how" to reach that audience.

I agree with the other posts in the thread. You really need to pinpoint your target audience, determine where they would be and then somehow draw them from there to your site. It is important for you to post meaningful threads on the site to keep people attracted and interactive. Also it does not hurt to add extra modifications to the site to keep them around when they are not posting, such as an arcade or something similar.

sometimes making forums only accessible to registered users will work..and also don't forget to put a flashy alert on home page that PLEASE REGISTER TO GET ACCESS TO ( WHAT EVER YOU OFFER HERE) ...

Content, and discussions worthy of being discussed. There is nothing else! Contests suck! They will only pull in people long enough to loose, then they are off till the next contest, and that can get costly and is not a way to truly generate members....

Which leads to KEEPING members, and that is COMMUNITY, not social networking, I mean the actual family aspect of the community.

30% bounce rate from Youtube? it sounds very nice, but video promotion is not suitable for every niche indeed.

Posting on other forums in your niche is a good way. Also, investigate contests, if managed correctly they can result in active members.
