Twitter Slash Spammers with a Hammer - did your followers drop?

Twitter is cleaning spam accounts - reported last night.

Are you seeing any big changes (drop) in your Twitter Followers?

What are your thoughts on this in-house cleaning?

I think it is a great thing for anyone who is trying to build a good list of followers - not spammer.

Reply and tell us if you see any changes in your account.

Spammers do piss me off, but for twitter there isnt much to do, even genuine people writing genuine things can look/sound like spam. It's a lose-lose situation for twitter.

I predict that twitter will fall because of spam.

It is a strong statement and I don't totally disagree with you. Twitter being an open API that allows people to create third party applications, etc. There are hundreds of programs out there that constantly use Twitter as a marketing tool. Twitter isn't making money but the spammers are. Twitter will have to find a better way to manage this - not sure if they can - than to impose limits on account to do certain activity.

Sometimes it's ironic though, you'll have a non-spammer saying the most unimportant uninteresting things ("good morning", "my cat threw up a hair ball woa", "i played guitar for 3 hours, i'm tired!" ) and then there will be spammers that will be posting some really interesting links.

It's kind of like the paradox of the telemarketing industry (with so many people hating it, how are they still in business?)

I agree with you. Twitter is coming out with revised website next week they say to make it better - maybe a model to try to make a few dollars out of all the free publicity they are getting.

I saw some changes on my followers today.

    Wondering if others did too.

I dont like the fact that many web site are proventing people form geting their name out. i do undstand that most people abuse the internet and spame every one but if used correctly then i should be able to broadcast my brand on twitter and many other site rather than just being banned for no good reason.

I suddenly lost 80 or so followers this morning (UK time). This explains it.

It's their site. They can do what they like.

I'd be interested to know what constitutes spam on Twitter. As far as I know, nobody can put anything on my page unless I follow them.

We haven't noticed much change but our accounts are not huge.

WRT spam... yes it can be a little gray sometimes but more than anything, they needed to get the blatant spam out of there. I think that's what bothers everyone the most. Like these porn sites with like 50 accounts and they'll blast the trending topics. It gets old fast.

Lost 300? That is a lot but I hope they are all spammers though.

That is good for you. This is what everyone needs at the end of the day to have a good list BUT one has less control over who their followers are. Many marketing people are just simply following everyone and hoping the newbies will follow them back.

I agree there is just way to much spamming going on out there as it is and twitter is a very good tool for those of us who want to take the time and effort to build up a lost of followers the old fasion was! So I am all for the internal clean up more sites should follow suite.

Interesting, I lost 400 followers and I had no clue why. Good for Twitter in cleaning the place up, but at the same time those people will just remake their accounts. This is a band-aid to a structural problem.

Last night I lost 100 followers because twitter unfollowed all of my followers and including the ones that did not follow me. Then this morning when I went to check on my accounts 1/8 accounts had lost at least 100.
    Dang.
