I see a lot of threads about cost of living in India. I wonder how expensive is China compared to India and rest of the world. Any idea? (more interested in cost of basics - food, rent, transportation, internet etc).
Okey.I am live in PuDong,Shanghai,China... In this city,A Chinese meal usually cost around 10~15 Chinese yuan,The Taxi 11 yuan for the first 3 kilometres..2,300 Chinese yuan/month for rent... The price is very high... How about ur country?
2300 yuan would be little over $300 a month...isn't it? is that a flat? how many rooms? how far from main commercial districts in Shanghai?
I've been in Hong Kong once and i remember it was pretty cheap compared to singapore. Thats 2 years ago. Singapore is soo expensive!
1 USD = 6.81 Chinese yuan.... 2 bedroom house with 1 drawing room, bathroom(too small). At most 35 square metres.. Do you know Expo Shanghai 2010? Expo Shanghai 2010 is not far from here.
China is fantastic. I have just returned from a 5-month long business trip, and I loved it! Everything is cheap, especially for a Westerner. If you're an American the exchange rate is about 6.5 or 7 Yuan to US$1, so you'll be finding everything is ridiculously cheap. Some examples: Bottle of water: 1 Yuan Bottle of coke: 3 Yuan Dinner (one dish + rice): 8-15 Yuan (depending where you go of course) T-shirt: 80-100 Yuan Haircut: 10 Yuan Beijing subway: 2 Yuan to go anywhere Bus: Under 10 Yuan depending on destination You can do the math, but it is very, very affordable. I plan on returning in the near future, since I enjoyed it so much. Just a couple of things you should know before you go: 1) Learn some Chinese, especially numbers and important phrases. You will need it. 2) Bargain, especially at markets. NEVER pay the first price, at least 50% less or more. 3) Enjoy being a celebrity! Especially if you have fair skin, blonde hair or just look like a Westerner! Many Chinese, especially in smaller provinces rarely see foreigners (laowai, or wai-guoren as you may be called), and you'll probably hear a "Hello" or "Hi!" being shouted to you from across the street! Smile, say hello and don't be scared to take photos if locals ask you for one. They are just curious. Great place, I'd recommend it to anyone,
this is exactly the kind of feedback I was looking for.... 1 Yuan is roughly 7 INR. thus the above in INR would be..... Bottle of water: 7 INR. Bottle of coke: 21 INR. Dinner (one dish + rice): 56-105 INR (depending where you go of course) T-shirt: 560-700 INR. Haircut: 70 INR. Beijing subway: 14 INR to go anywhere Bus: Under 70 INR depending on destination seems almost same as in India...in fact, for certain items/services, India is slightly cheaper. e.g. 500-700 INR for a t-shirt seems to be a bit high to me.
Again, it really depends where you are shopping and what you are buying. If you go to Beijing and visit the Silk Street markets, which are targeted at tourists, you will probably pay too much or get overcharged. If you visit markets or shops where there are very few foreigners and tourists, you will probably have to bargain less and get a reasonable price up-front. The best thing to do is try and gather a bit of US currency, maybe a few thousand if you can, and living off that in China as a tourist should do you fine.
How much would it cost per night at a 5 star hotel? How much would a new car (those small ones!) cost? My brother-in-law went to Hong Kong in the 80's on business and he described it as the hooker capitol of the world, lol.
