My first sale, and a question

Discussion in 'Commission Junction' started by promisem, Jul 11, 2009.

I was excited to see my first sale after getting about 200+ clicks from text and image ads. But I was wondering about something.

I get great clickthrough rates on the image ads and lousy rates on my text links. But my first sale was from a text link. Is that normal?

Someone who bothers to read your text will probably be far more 'ready to buy' than someone who simply clicks a banner. If they've Googled for something specific, found it, and read your text content - then their click will be far more likely to convert to a sale than someone who simply clicks a banner with a sexy chick on it (or whatever).

Then are banners worth running at all? I could use that inventory for AdSense instead.

Well I think people are getting smarter now. Less people clicking banners now. So better put the links into the posts and bang! :)

I get more converted traffic on links not banners probably because of what Kerosene said.

On our account, click through rate has always been way higher with banner ads. But the actual percentage of sales is pretty similar.

They are worth it if you already know the placement site converts for you. You can run placement reports to find out exactly which ones are profitable and which aren't.

i am still waiting for my first sale. About a week i started with CJ. I have a gaming site so i am selling leads to MMOG sites... I have plenty of clicks and no lead. The games are free and no one plays them. Is this normal? Or my client isn't counting any lead for me?

    The client is outspark.

I have one sale after more than 200 clicks. But I think my category is very competitive (travel). So it does seem to take a lot of clicks.

Weee... Got my first sale. But it only appeared today but it is dated two days ago. That is strange for me, because i am new at CJ. Is it normal?

    Bye

I agree. That can make or break you. What kind of keywords are you targeting for your traffic? I try and stick with less competitive keywords. I like to use long tail keywords. I have seen a better return that way. I also noticed that when I use text links i have a higher chance of getting a sale.

    Congratulations on the first sale.

Keep the campaign going and tweak from there. If you are spending less than what you make, it is considered a profitable start, you can scale it big from there by targeting more keywords and tweaking it to get higher CTR and better conversion (if you have control over the landing page).

It is normal. Text ads are expected to perform better than image ads and it catches the readers eye more (inline) when they read the content. How long does it take to get that 200 clicks? Keep testing the ads. CTR is one, but a relevant ad that attracts the right buyer is the key to success. You know, you can have ads with free free free, people will click, but no one will buy. Juggle between the attractiveness of the ads while getting the right buyer. You can only do that with lot of tests in your market.

I'm still building and revising. But I can't help but point out that CJ says you typically get $X per 100 clicks. I'm now up to 300 clicks, I keep revising and still have only the one sale. If nothing else, I'm starting to understand why 97 percent of all affiliate marketers give up or don't make a sale. Or something like that. It's definitely not for the faint of heart.

I'm still making far more money on a cpm basis from AdSense.

Text links work better in general for me too. I think a lot of people simply tune out banner ads these days.
