Not very impressed with bing

A few weeks ago I signed up for a bing webmaster tools account, and submitted a sitemap for all of my sites.

Today, I log into my bing webmaster tools and see that only 3,010 pages have been indexed of my main forum. The forum has 63,345 threads and 796,949 post.

Out of over 800,000 urls submitted in the site map, bing has only inexed 3,010 of them. Even if bing only indexes the threads and not the individual post, that means that bing is missing @60,000 of my URLs

I am NOT impressed, even in the slightest. How is this search engine supposed to grow and be popular if it can not index a site.

In the end, I look for "bing" to fall to the wayside just like what Live and MSN has done. There is no way bing is going to be able to compete with Google if it can not index a site.

I kind of like it as a user. As a webmaster not so much.

Agreed. The index is teeny tiny compared with the mighty G. Not sure it'll drop by the wayside just yet with M$ behind it but it's got a ways to go yet.

The Bing Webmaster Tools are no where near as comprehensive as the Google Webmaster Tools at the moment. Hopefully this will get better in time.

    Hi Kev,

I took a look at your site and also spoke with our crawling expert. Your rank in Bing is decent, but there is also room for improvement. As you may or may not know, some of our indexing is based on rank. So while you work on that part of the equation, I want to assure you we are VERY hard at work to change a lot of things in our next release. I can't go into great detail, but one thing we are working on is site coverage--especially for forums.

We are also working to address the lack in our webmaster tools. This might take a little longer to make improvements, but we will make them.

I understand that both of those statements are a little vague. However, I want you to know that we value your feedback and support and are making changes that we think are inline with your (webmaster) requests.

Since Bing launched, i never submitted my site's sitemaps or anything, and I see my sites are indexed, but very few pages as compared to Google.

@Brett Yount, it's good to hear about the changes, and hopefully they will be made sooner.

You have 800,000 urls in one sitemap???? I'm not sure what Bings policy is, but Google suggest not having more than 50,000 in one sitemap. For a huge site like yours I believe the plan is to have a small sitemap pointing to other sitemaps, similar to an outline. Maybe that is why Bing has not even really looked at yours.

Its 17 sitemaps with 49,000 URLs each and 1 sitemap with 18,115 urls.

My forum runs and automatic sitemap generator that rebuilds the sitemap every night. The sitemap generator then pings the major search engines and notifies them that the new sitemap is ready.

Hello Brett, thank you for the reply.

At one time my main forum had 290,000 pages indexed with google. In April, 2009 I had sitemap problems and 280,000 pages were delisted. Everything has been fixed for 2 months.

I suspect that if the management of Bing wants to compete with Google, they are going to find a way to index more pages.

Bing is not bad as a search engine, and don't forget it's a beta version. you can not compare it to google until final version is released.

Is it still under beta version. I don't think so. They are advertising it on Google too.
