It sounds like you need to move up from shared hosting and get a VPS. This would be cheaper than getting a dedicated server, plus, you should be able to get a decent server for a good price. VBulletin is without any addons can be a bit of a resource hog, and when you start putting addons in, it can get ugly.

For $59 you can get an Atom 330 Dedicated server with 2GB RAM and 160GB HDD from some providers. The Atom 330 rivals a Pentium 4 (S775) HT 3Ghz apparently.

I can help with high speed load balanced clustered servers. Its hard to give a price until I can see how much resources it will use but I estimate $100-200 per month. I will let you try for a week free so we can measure the resources consumed to get a fair price for you :)

You should be fine with a High end VPS as it would be cost effective. dedicated servers would prove costly, since they are unmanaged at the price points other posters mentioned. a managed dedicated server costs many times more than a managed VPS.

I would have said with that amount of members on the forum it would be worth going for a dedicated server if you shop around you can find some good deals.

^ I agree with gary4gar. You should be fine with a good VPS server.

Search for a reliable VPS provider and switch as soon as possible if you are having issues with your current host.

If you ask me I would recommend these VPS companies.

    LiquidWeb - Starts from $60/m
    Servint.com - Starts from $50/m
    VPS.net - Starts from $20/m

    Good luck

Do NOT go for OpenVZ VPS since they use shared resources and your VPS might get suspended for using to much CPU load.. go for Virtuozzo or Xen VPS since you will have your own dedicated resource. If the price is too high for you then I suggest your get celeron. I have my dedicated server with sparkgate[dot]net before which is cheap yes they does everything to make my dedi run the way I like.

Remember DO NOT go for OpenVZ VPS.

With 300 - 400 people online at all times, you need a high end VPS or an entry level dedicated server. A few months ago my traffic was running about 450 people online at peak times, and my VPS with 1 gig of memory could not keep up. So if you have 300 - 400 people online, and you go with a VPS, that leaves little room for growth.

I suggest you go with an entry level dedicated server with at least 2 gigs of memory and a dual core CPU. That will give you some room to grow with.

For the hosting provider, I recommend future hosting - I have been with them for over 2 years and I am very happy with their service and support.

You can get an Atom server at FDCservers with 2GB of RAM for $49/month. If you are serious about your forum at this point a dedicated server would be good for you.
