How so? Do you have an example? And how do you compare what you think MS is doing compared to Google toolbar reporting your entire browsing and search history back to Google's servers?

I don't use the Googlebar, and I use Linux anyway. Go figure.

@ilikenwf O.K., at least you admit you can't back up what you wrote. I respect that.

I have windows machines. I just don't use them often, but I do use firefox on those too...IE loads faster upon opening it, but other than that the performance is lacking...

Power is a loose term to use anyway.

Firefox is way faster, as far as I can see, IE isn't that powerful.

If you compare IE8 from its predecessors, IE8 really improves in about anything. But if you compare IE8 with other browsers then it may lack the edge to be better than average.

Except maybe opera because it's a bloated browser.

Please note that Corwin's statements about HTTP headers above are false, misleading or bald faced lies. He's trying to wrap his half-truths around text that most of you don't have the time to figure out or understand, such as IE serving up headers other browsers don't have (proprietary information and not part of the standard. He won't tell you that. I bet he'll deny it.)

If I was a mod, I'd ban him. He's doing you all a serious mis-service but the one way you can prove to yourself what he's attempting to do is this: Find ONE web site, that isn't a Microsoft web site, that says IE8 is a better browser than ANY other browser. You can't. You won't. Another way is to find ONE known web developer that even uses IE8 for his own personal/work use. You can't. You won't.

What does that tell you? Perhaps corwin works at Microsoft in the department that does online activities such as this, don't know, but I can tell you that he's deceptive and has yet to tell the truth about anything I've ever seen him post.

    Howard, howard, howard..

So much immaturity for such a tiny little man. I think his tinfoil hat is getting to be a little too tight...

Let me ask you this: Is it your position that IE cannot determine, server-side, from the HTTP headers, what version of Flash the visitor is using - WITHOUT COOKIES OR JAVASCRIPT???

    Is it???

So, if I were to demonstrate here a short, simple, easy to understand server-side script that reads the HTTP Headers from Internet Explorer to determine the version of Flash the visitor is using, I would absolutely prove that you are not only wrong, but a fraud - correct???

Answer me, Howard. Don't chicken out. Is that your position - that I am wrong about the IE HTTP headers and determining the version of Flash the client is using?

Are you game, Howard? Or will you chicken out and lie about yourself again?

alright. On the second part of this you got me. I use firefox normally. HOWEVER you are wrong (as you usually are with your universal statements)
about that being true for every site. There are a number of sites that don't run Firefox as well as they do IE. In other word for accessing these sites IE is better.

I actually find this a pain since I would rather use Firefox exclusively but I have had to fire up IE at least once or twice a week to access a site. Usually a video file or a presentation just refuses to load. Close firefox open IE - runs smooth as ice.

In some cases companies are using technologies that out of the box only work with IE. Now you can rant about it if you wish. thats fine but the reality is people like to use the sites THEY want to use not the ones their browser allows them to.

See unlike you people just want to use the technology that works for them. So they switch back and forth. I'm not going to bother installing work arounds. If I want to use blockbusters online movie service. I'll use it with IE not say - oh my goodness my anti-MS stance forbids me from using Blockbuster so let me install something more on my system to get around having to use the evil MS software.

    http://www.blockbuster.com/download

So for those sites - Yes IE8 is more powerful. Now to be honest when I am not on those sites the MS browser closes faster than a blink. I'm a firefox guy but like most I use IE when it calls for it.

    @nontemplates, wonderful post!

For myself, I use Firefox and Internet Explorer about the same, and occasionally I use Chrome. They all work about the same for me, it's really a matter of how I partition my work. I'll have one browser window w/tabs open for each project.

Using all browsers insures that I'm personally up and aware on how these browsers are currently working, so I don't need to rely on 3rd party opinions disguised as research.

I use FF mainly because of the security risks associated with IE and the fact that there are an abundance of FF plug-ins that make Dev work easier.
