Just 1 more tip to be add, as we know the biggest problem of open web is its not unite. We have to create separate identity's on every website. I am writing a blog on how that will impact traffic and that will be up within 2 weeks. There are services that are in the beta version like Google Friend Connect, Facebook Connect, Oath, Open Id check out those to see how they can be useful and affect your site in building traffic.

Link to your heart’s content- Links do not have to just be certain
words. You can also make title links and anything else you want
links. People are automatically drawn to links, so switch it up and
make your content stand out
Make them laugh- reading something that is humorous on the web
is a welcoming change. If you can add humor to your articles, go for
it! This is one of the best ways to gain respect from your readers
and convince your prospect to click to your site.

Yes. Good Content and User Interface really stand out. It can entice people to come back. Speed is also another factor. It is not just link but also User Satisfaction is important.

 

User Satisfaction can be achieved through Content and one should have good color/templae so that user find easy and it may not strain them while reading.
Speed is not a greater concern but for a development point of view you should have jquery to minimize page reloads.
I agree about User Satisfaction is most important Content Should be standout..

Nice article, a bit simple, but it's got the basics. You may want to change your health and gardening example however, I can think of a number of reasons those 2 topics would be perfectly related, perhaps use gardening and arcade website design, something more random.
