.info domains still worth it?

Do you think .info domains are still worth buying for a new website?

I'm not talking a high-budget venture here. I'm looking to experiment a little with certain SEO strategies and will need about 20 fresh .info domains for it. Do these domains still have ranking potential? I realize that they're devalued when compared to .com's and .net's but is it that big of a difference? Are .info domains really so scorned upon that they're completely useless?

I still have never seen an .info show up in a SERP - and they've been around for a really long time now. I don't believe in anything that isn't .com or .net

.info domains are mainly used for PPC experiments and anything related to SEO simply fails.

Have look at the SERP for 'Austria' or 'Spain' and you will find the .info web sites leading the way.
So Google is not prejudiced at all, however the words 'cheap .info SEO India' are very likely
to make any spider very suspicious.
    ( No offense here ) .

Dot info is as good as the others are. Maybe you'll need better SEO but they are a nice alternative.

I think .info is as good as any other extension....it just depends on what you do with it. I had a cell phone related .info domain with a wordpress blog on it. I got it up to a PR4 and got to the second page for some pretty good terms in google. I sold the site about a year ago on sitepoint for $650. I spent about $200 for the domain, unique articles and seo, so I came out $450.

    Hope this helps

I had started my web career from lots of .info domains! I still have those domains but still i m having good earnings nevertheless it doesn't have that much resell value! which .com's have. The only factor which i dont like it.

Mostly people claim as .info is more popular for Spammers!

Pretty much. A lot of hosts and ISPs also block email from domains with that *.tld for that reason.

I host a couple of hundred legit *.infos and we've never had any problem with those domains not being listed by search engines. Girl Scout troops, bloggers, and the like.

.com, .net, and.org are your best bet. .info and such don't get as much SERP attention and are only really valuable if the domain is memorable.

It may sound obvious, but I reckon the content of a .info site would be important. SEO aside, I would also look at the human aspect. If a user lands on a .info page - that is what they would expect to see, info, valuable content on the subject matter - as opposed to a sales letter or a bunch of ads. Although this may be the case for most websites, e.g .com and .net, I think it would be more true for a .info site.

there is no biasing of any sort by any search engines for any extension of the website ..
.info is not inferior in terms of SERPS ..

And BTW just remember that if want to renew the .info site after one year u will end up paying the same amount as .com so at max u can save first years domain charges a lil bit

I dont know if its just a myth that info doesnt rank that well, but surely i even havent seen any .info site ranking pretty well. So better go with .com if they are available.

In my opinion, i think .info domains are worthless. What i've seen for the past year is people creating lot's of web directories on .info domains (with free templates) and then turning around and selling them for a cheap profit. They don't rank high and just useless to the new owner. (Besides giving the web directory industry a bad name) lol

Perhaps use a .info domain for a article directory and see how well you can get it ranked in the search engines. Article directories usually have quality content on it always if maintained well. Perhaps that would be the best site to start with a .info domain and get a nice price tag for after a year or two being online.
