Why not ask this in the correct section? (Directory Section)

What might be dead to you surely isnt to others and the benefits from it are still
there depending on the quality of the directory in question.

PS I had your thread moved to correct section... thx Mods ;)

Don't know if its true or not. still i do directory submissions. And i also do wonder why sites with unrelevant link rank higher.

I wouldn't say they are dead. There is a definite slow-down though.

Every business is having a slow down. Slow down just means that the competition thins creating opportunities to expand and magnify your success when the market shifts up.

slow down doesn't mean dead, you can still get backlinks from general web directories.

I wouldn't say they're dead. I'd just say that it's harder to find directories that benefit you in the SERPs. They're out there, but it takes some time to dig through them. Look for directories that get some traffic from the search engines or from a user community (not just webmasters) and that also have well edited categories. Those general directories still pass PR and link juice for the SERPs.

Directory submissions are not dead, nor will they ever die out, they will always play an important role in building backlinks.

@EC23: Submission to free general directories is not dead, try it out for a 'test site' (not gambling / poker site), and you can probably say this with more conviction. I use directory submission on a daily basis and see positive results.

The page rank freaks for the most part have thankfully stopped trying to get crappy sites submitted and the business has gone back the where it was.

Sometimes it is difficult to accept the obvious: submiting to general directory is dead. However may be just a few directories are still worth, but not for long. Basically, in practical terms they are useless, the main purpose is to sell backlinks, nothing else.

and what do you base this information on?
"few are still worth it but not for long"

directories are still a successful strategy especially when used in conjunction with other link building methods
to throw around unfounded predictions like that is incorrect and without basis

    I don't think so .
If your competitors do the general directory submission, but you don't.
Then your site are dead, not the directory submission itself. lol

directory submission is not dead simply because it's the key to the first door of search engines and internet

maybe social sites outpaced it but believe me it's not dead yet
