Is there room in the world for one more directory?

Discussion in 'Directories' started by fordP, Jul 31, 2006.

I've been thinking about starting a niche directory, but is there really any more room in the world for another directory? I just want to own a directory and grow it, I've worked on many sites and it seems like conquering a directory would be a fun experience. I wouldn't abandon it after a year or 2, but is there really room for another one? I'd like to hear experiences people have had with starting their directorys, the good the bad. Would you guys submit to a directory (for free, no recip) with no pagerank and only a couple other links? or would you consider it a lost cause?

    Thanks

Sure go for it. I started one, but the site was already somewhat developed, so I had a pagerank and some time on the domain. If you market it correctly, and provide your submissions with good results, you could surely compete in the market.

What niche are you looking to get into fordP?

Yes. That's what most people on DP do. They understand that it is a longterm investment. It costs them nothing but time, so they get in early whilst the directory has no PR or links. Once they directory has some PR and is populated, people generally expect it to convert to paid listings so that the owner can generate revenue.

Once you've decided on what niche you want your directory in drop me a line. If your listed with me, I will ensure that you don't go unnoticed :)

There is room for niche directories. There are some areas which have few and low quality directories. I'm thinking of launching one soon, at the moment I am trying to handle phpld. :)

Nope, we're full up... sorry! :D

I'm kidding, but I think this is an important question. Many times in my career, but especially when I was still a student, I've heard people express disdain for doing something that someone else has already done.

It doesn't matter whether other people have done something or not. What matters is that you can do it as well or better and that you have some type of plan to compete with those others effectively.

A lot of people, even those in the business world, don't seem to realize this. You aren't likely to compete with Google, but you can sure compete with thousands of high school students making $5 a month off their own niche directory. Don't be scared off, be competitive.

EDIT: My directory is listed with Silencer, if you have a qualifying directory you want to get it on his list!

    The good:

You can make some money (eventually).
There is less competition for niche directories.
You get to see a lot of sites you wouldn't find otherwise.
You will learn a lot about SEO and directory submission in general.

    The bad:

    The spam.
Niche directories get a lot less traffic.
A far greater proportion of irrelevant sites are submitted than with general directories.
Reviewing takes a lot of time.
    The spam.
    The spam.
    The spam.

My advice would be not to even consider launching a new niche directory without some kind of filtering. Start with a word filter, and add to it as your first submissions come through. Then look for a good captcha, preferably not image-based, because you will soon find you need one. Do these things and you will avoid most of the worst problems facing directory owners.

Thanks for the advice guys. I'm working on a pphld theme right now.

If you have a niche directory, is it a bad idea to have a category for irrelevant sites? Like have one called "Other Resources" or something where I could link to other directorys and any other type of site? And it would also (hopefully) receive the spam submissions so that I could sort through important topics first?

It depends on why you want to have a niche directory, as opposed to a general one. Do you really want to end up reviewing every single type of site that is submitted, even if it's not on a subject that interests you or that you have any knowledge of? Do you really want your niche directory to be treated as a general one?

Also, it definitely won't receive the spam submissions, which are just as likely to end up in random categories as anywhere else.
