    Hi Everyone,
I've read in numerous places, that the results returned by running a search 'link:<siteurl>' will only return links from sites of PR >4.
    Is this true ?

It now returns a seemingly random selection of backlinks that don't appear to be related to the PR of the backlink at all.

As a means for checking on links to your page(s), it's now become pretty much useless, which I suspect is what Google intended.

Try "+www.yourdomain.+com" as a search term instead. Not perfect but will return a lot more sites that link to you.

Not all results returned are necessarily linking to you but may include your url as text on their page.

use Yahoo to give you an idea of how many backlinks you have.

True. Use one of the other engines. On Yahoo, use "linkdomain:" instead of "link:". I usually use http://www.alltheweb.com but I have noticed in the past few weeks that MSN Beta seems to be reporting the maximum number of links for my domains.

You should pick one and stick to it. But, don't pick Google (of course) 'cos as Minstrel pointed out it's just showing a random sample of BLs.

MSN has been both faster and more complete for counting backlinks lately, that I've noticed.

Using either Yahoo or MSN (or in the past alltheweb) will give you some idea of who links to you based on the links Yahoo or MSN know about -- the problem is they don't tell you what links Google knows about. One usually assumes that if any other SE knows about a backlink, Google will too but of course that may not be true.

Note that I'm not advising against using other SEs to check for backlinks -- just reminding you that what's in Yahoo is not necessarily in Google.

you can also try marketleap. They show you the links you have in google, msn, yahoo, alltheweb, altavista and a few other places. They also show you trends over time.

But again the links they show for Google are only the number reported by Google, not the real number in the database.

Market Leap is great, though recently it look as though Altavista and All the Web are history in the reporting.
