Now I am getting used to Free Mind, a free mind mapping utility that can also be used for writing.

I use Microsoft Word, but just a word of caution that if you're working from a trial version (ie bought a new computer etc.) the program will lock down your work and make the work inaccessable until you pay for the full version once the trial runs out.

I learned this the hard way and lost access to a 6,400 word essay.

I use Crimson Editor and Notepad++ for programming, Open Office for short articles intended for use on the web, and MS Word for working on my book. I used to rely on Open Office for almost everything, but my publisher's templates work a lot better in MS Word, so I ended up re-installing it.

I usually use notepad to write my article, and then copy-paste it to word to correct my words.

I use Word for all of my writing, the newest version - still getting to the grips with the 'new' interface but getting there slowly.

I use MS Word cause I'm comfortable using it and I'm used to using it. Though many don't like the 2007 version, I find it cool and improved. I love the interface and I think it's more user-friendly. Just be patient and you'll get used to it in no time.

Notepad also works for me. I like the simplicity, and I just realized I'm beginning to like Courier font.

I usually use notepad or gedit/ medit. If I am at home, I use gedit, but when I am in my office, I use notepad. Flexible :)
