Wordpress plugins: so many...

The quantity of available plugins is overwhelming. It takes ages to choose some!
(and the easy install/update doesn't work for me!)

How do you proceed particularly when you setup a new WP blog?

    Any suggestion would be welcome!

    Thanks!

    :)

Well, those are good ones, but there's so many cool and useful ones...

And of course it also depends on what type of website you are setting up.

Do you guys go through them one by one? Or do you just go for the ones that are recommended elsewhere? Or what else?

    Thanks!

    :)

You need to go with those plugins which you think useful for you.

Remember one thing that using lots of plugins maybe slow down loading speed of your blog.

I prefer to use plugins that are for seo reasons, avoiding using too many for the sake of features, i like sticking to ones so popular that i believe they will continue to be updated.

One blog of mine might differ from another because it needs a particular plugin for a feature that i need.

Also some plugins stop others from working, i installed one that stopped me going into the settings of another.

I tend to install the standard plugins (analytics, sitemaps, do follow) etc and then do the rest as I need them. I find easy adsenser good for managing adsense and I really like keyword luv/comment luv to manage comments

There are a lot out there, but as I feel "All in one seo pack" and "XML site map" are the most useful and widely used plugins. Addition to that I use Askimet and Wassup plugins.

Yeah, the problem is how to figure out which ones to pick? You can't try them all, but the list is huge!

If you stick to the 4-5 most popular ones, you may miss so many!

Nobody is really telling me how they look and find plugins suitable for their websites...

That is, ultimately, what I'd like to find out!

    Try again, thanks!

Well i browsed a few times before at http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/ just to see what was available.

I also have found some by seeing recommendations through threads here.

Also when ive needed a feature in the past like ratings, ive went looking for that at the above resource.

You don't need to pick them all at once. You do need a good anti spam plug in if you leave your comments open.

    Add plugins as you learn.

And it's a good idea to read the reviews and try to pick plugins that will be maintained into the future. If you begin to rely on a plug in then find out later that it's not supported as WP Evolves you can be put in a position of scrambling to fix your site.

OK, thanks guys, the last 2 posts were more what I was looking for.

That is, more or less, what I do at the moment.

    Any more ideas?

Do you know of websites that are particularly interesting for tests and reviews of WP plugins?

My advice is install and use any that you think u might use and then cut those u end up not using or liking. You end up with the good ones.

Depends on what you are looking for. And it's good advice not to "overinstall" with plugins. Keep it simple and install what you need only.

If you are a video person, try this: TubePress.org

For stopping spam comments, I prefer this: WP-SpamFree. Personally I think it's better than Akismet.

Platinum SEO is a must have. I think All In One SEO has been discontinued or no longer supported.

    Akismet - for security
All in One SEO - for SEO, obviously
Collapsing Categories - javascript menu for categories, very useful
Custom Field Template - allows you to insert a custom box in posts
Cforms - javascript contact form, many options
Global Translator - uses Google Translate
Sociable - for social media sharing
Link Truncator - shortens the links in comments
Next Gen Gallery - very powerful gallery plugin, with Flash slideshow
Twitter Tools - displays Twitter account
WordPress Automatic Upgrade - let's you upgrade your WP following some easy steps
    WP-PageNavi - page navigation
    WP-PostRatings - rating plugin
    WP-PostViews - displays page views
    WP-Print - for printing

    and few others more.
