read a few posts about interlinking web 2.0 properties as well as linking each property to a main page.

My question is do you guys do this sort of thing JUST for for link or also monetize those properties with adsense?

You won't be able to monetize most of these web 2.0 properties with AdSense anyway.
The webmasters use linkwheels for SEO purposes in 99% of the cases.

monetization with adsense will depend on which web 2.0 properties you use. some allow adsense revenue sharing and some dont. squidoo, hubpages, flixya, qassia, etc offer revenue sharing while lot of the web 2.0 and social media sites dont. if revenue sharing is on your mind, then pick the sites carefully ahead of time.

some people use the linkwheel or social media/web 2.0 pages purely for link building while others use for both revenue generation + link building

You would not want someone to click out of your web 2.0 site, you want them going to your money page.

Most use it for raising the serp results for your money page, but will oftentimes be outranked by the web 2.0

    SEO purposes only.

If your link wheels were getting enough traffic to make you more then $1 with adsense then you are doing something wrong on your main page. :p

It goes through a process of trial and error revisions. Drive 100 uniques to your money page and if your not making a single sale (which you are supposed to) there's something wrong along the way. You need to check your keywords - if they are the "hungry" visitors, your sales page - if it has been done for the right audience, your product - if its the one your visitors are looking for. Generally, these are the 3 things you need to keep an eye on. Im sure people can add more to this 3 things. :)

Adsense maybe is not the right option in this case since you can't place the code on most of them.
However you can try to place affiliate links over there.
If you get enough traffics you probably can make a sale or two.
For adsense purpose, hubpages can be a good option.
You can also try infobarrels for adsense.

I've seen alot of services with these link wheels, have people been getting good results in the SERPs for their sites from these links? or is it more for the exposure and traffic from the combination of the several web 2.0 properties?

And how do you build links for the web 2.0 properties without making it over rank your site and target page?

You only inner link a small subset of your properties. So there would be little to no chance of then ranking. Also it's only for backlinks, you won't get much exposure or traffic to the properties themselves.

Lets say you have 4 properties. A links to B which links to C which links to D which links to A. All of them will link to your main page. Submit all 4 of these properties to rss directories so the engines can find them. The inner linking helps each page a little and since all of them link to your main everything funnels down.

That's a simple description you can get more indepth with your linking structure of course.

Use a landing page and put a link to clickbank for example but if you don't have money or a website make a squidoo page and social bookmark one of these sites or you can build both and link them, a linkwheel consists of building crosslinks to every module of your linkwheel.
PM me to get a free squidoo guide which will guide you through the squidoo process.
Afterwards add your squidoo to sites such as feedage
Add another part to your linkwheel, for example an article, submit it to ezinearticles or articlesbase and link it to your squidoo page and social bookmark it and submit it to rss sites.

Keep on doing these steps and your linkwheel will become bigger and bigger and bring in some nice sales.

Thanks for the insight guys. One last question, do you guys recommend creating backlinks from social bookmarks to the web 2.0 properties. Maybe even using a tool like BMD for those links? Or should the Rss feeds be enough? I figure you would want to get enough link juice to web 2.0 page so that your target site benefits from a higher PR web 2.0 property.

tools like BMD is not mandatory, IMO.
however if you have it, use it.
If you read the actual linkwheel ebook, Linus uses bookmarking tool.
