any backlink counts as a "vote" for your site. How much weight that vote is worth is determined by several factors such as pagerank, relevance, outbound links on page, where the link is placed on the page, surrounding text, site authority... the list goes on. However its safe to say that while the big G may decide not to give a link to your site any weight its almost certain that it will not have a NEGATIVE impact on you.

Google has publically stated that there is almost nothing someone can do off site to negatively impact your sites rankings. The key word of course is almost. However if you are wondering if a comment on a blog about robots pointing back to your site about oranges is going to hurt you, the answer is no. Its not the highest quality link in the world, but its still a link and links are good :)

Backlinks count be it from relevant or irrelevant sources. Its like a vote to your site, irrelevant backlinks have less weight in votes and relevant has a higher weight.

    But every backlink counts

Yes, every backlink counts since search engines have different ranking algorithms. It's better to have a lot of backlinks.

Yahoo! will index all backlinks anyway.

    No they wont hurt you
but they wont help you either

Say if some competitors picks you up and start doing Black listed forum spamming
So in that case you are victim so as i said it wont hurt you but wont help you either

you never know which back links work for you. Highest relevancy of back links are being appreciated but it has a negative impact on your website so the best way is to use mixed link building strategies...:)

Had irrelevant or unrelated blog comments could hurt results, then all i need to gain good rankings in "G" is to get irrelevant and unrelated blog comments for my competitors:D
At the most they may not count as backlinks....

you get irrelevant link if you have put it on a non-relevant niched site... But yes, everyone has a point in counting out the relevancy and weight of a certain link, its just that Google has its own algo and their the one judging it...

Thanks! ApexSEORM for the detailed answer.
Can a massive amount of irrelevant back links cause negative impact on ranking?
Some People's view is, it's cause for ranking fluctuations. Is it true?
