About RSS feeds.

You know, I've been building websites for about 2 months now. But the only thing that I have never catch to is how RSS feeds works and how to code them manually.

I made some research but I always end up unsatisfied. Feed generators is a great way to get your feeds right at your doorstep, yet, they are limited at some point.

All I wanted was to add Yahoo or Google news feed and have the freedom to set my own positioning, fonts, and color scheme.

It seems like they are secretive how RSS feeds "really" work and instead offer you some RSS builders to build your very own.

Anyway, all I wanted was to know is that:
Are RSS feeds that really difficult to code? Code blocks that will update your feeds for you.
Are RSS builder or software worth using? If yes, can you recommend one.

By the way, if you have useful links, please add them too. Thanks.

I typically use www.rssinclude.com. I can customize width and colors and such. I even figured out a way using RssInclude and Blogger.com to embed video players RIGHT IN THE FEED! If you want me to show you how to do that just let me know.

    Hope this helps.

One excellent reference I forgot to include: http://www.mnot.net/rss/tutorial/ -- sorry.

BTW, at present not many owners of private Web sites are using RSS/Atom feeds to announce page updates and new content additions although they are well suited for that purpose. In addition to keeping visitors apprised of changes, RSS/Atom feeds may lead to increased visitation and page loads. Of course, feed availability must be prominently advertised on the site -- probably most appropriately on the Home Page.

Any decent and major cms like wordpress, joomla have buildin rss functions .
It is not recommended to manual write rss feed for your site unless you are good at php . Good luck.

I have reinstalled an RSS Feed on my reference pages (either link in my sig block) as an example. I actually write my feeds in XML/RDF (just another way of doing it). You can observe the coding via the W3C Validation (scroll down the result page).
