how long will it usually take for a new site to start getting traffic from engines

Hi DP people I am little bit new to this SEO thing and I was wondering how long will it take for a new site to actually start getting traffic from search engines ?
I am doing the following things currentyle

social bookmarking
article writing
forum signatures
directory submission
on page SEO

what will be the time required in case of a competitive niche ?

Any other methods ?

It really depends on how compeitive the niche is,

I've had my sites ranking in the top 10 within 24 hours due to only a few competitors.

Sometimes it can take months/years to rank highly for competitive keywords.

You seem to be doing the right things,

You can also try making a squidoo lens and hubpage to get more links.

Also make a video on youtube and post your link in the description!

There's no definite time in getting traffic in search engine. It all depends on your efforts on how you manage getting quality links.

Another important thing to note is "time" only matters if you are utilizing it to the fullest. I have gone months not doing much for seo efforts, then go at it like a mad man for weeks straight, and the results are then shown a couple weeks after that. Like HydroJohn said it's all about how competitive your field is, and how much time/effort your willing to put in...typically you can probably expect results within 3 weeks if you work at it hard each day.

It you have really High PR backlink you can start getting traffic with in 10-15 days.

I got my PR2 in 2months. 1st month was interesting and 2nd was full of traffic

 

That's a tough question but all of those methods you mention will help. Although I wouldn't expect to see much traffic in a real hurry.

One method you could try that will bring you some direct traffic is by posting on Yahoo Answers. The traffic you get will also be targeted which is handy.

 

I think you need atleast 3 months to get the 1st page position it also depends on your keyword
