    About the plugins,
    I would suggest these plugins:
    1) maxblogpress-ping-optimizer
    2) wp-pagenavi
    3) google-sitemap-generator
    4) All in one seo pack or Headspace2 (Both are seo plugins)

    try www.wpthemebuilder.com , and build your own.. it have multi-column photoblogging layout styles too plus a custom home page with some gallery or slideshow widgets.. all can be done through theme builder, if you are not concern about uniqueness then go for some free photoblogging themes

    Wow, some of the suggested themes are really nice, however, getting them to work is not that easy, at least that's my experience.
