Google's Webmaster Central team has posted a video Matt Cutts Answers: "Will Google consider Yahoo! Directory and BOTW as source of paid links? If no, why is this different from another site that sell links. Everyone here should take a look.

Funny thing about this video and it is the same thing Matt has always said is that you have to reject links or submissions. My question is how in the world do they know if you are rejecting submission or not? Do they have some kind of contract with paypal or something, in order to find out this kind of information you would have to hack into someone's database and watch every single submission that comes through just to if it is rejected or accepted.

I still boil's down to the fact that if your not owned by a large company then you must be selling links.

I think he means that if there aren't poor quality sites listed in your paid directory then you must be rejecting some because not all your submissions would be of high quality anyway..

    Hello...

Good video,... he does explain what they look for is quality sites and relevancy so
    that should open some eyes.

    @Banless

Yes i often wonder how they know how many have been rejected VS included..

He did mention the directories here today and gone tomorrow syndrome
which could be an indication of domain age being a factor.

    thx

I think there is some common sense in judging directories. If every link is a keyword link and not website/company names then it is more likely to be a junk directory.

I think you can pretty much tell just by looking at a directory by taking different factors into consideration.

Google must have a combination of algo's and manual visits to determine this.

For as much as I remember, when I submitted one of our sites to Yahoo and paid $199 - it was accepted. They definitely DO, sell links. The site I am talking about was not a directory, just a PHP site with niche articles. And if they do not accept the submitted site - they still keep the money!

At least, we - directory webmasters (and not day flies directory sites owners) DO REFUND submissions that are blatant ads (be it Adsense or the like), or warez, porn etc.

Call it a good video - call it what you like BUT - Google sucks more and more by the day, and we as webmasters trying to earn with legitimate sites are screwed by Google wherever they can

confirms my belief, basically link farms that open up to all sorts of sites like site scrapers, pharma spammers etc are subject to be treated as having less value than those that are more rigid and critical of sites added to them.

While I will not contest their authority, I will say that BOTW is paid link directory that Google should not exclude from penalty. Dont' forget that this directory will take your money if your site is not accepted (scammers!!!).

He is basically saying that you can have paid link directory but make sure your directory have useful info for your visitors.
