The best way to add fresh content

I have read much about the benefits of adding fresh content to a website to help with serps. But, what is the most effective way of doing this?

    - Keep adding html pages
-Add a blog to the domain
    - Add a forum to the domain
    - others?

What do people find the most effective way of adding fresh content to help boost serps rankings? ... I know off-site seo is also key, but my current focus is on-site.

    Thanks

    Gordano :)

First two methods are great for adding fresh content on your website. If you have some specific information related to your industry then its good to add separate HTML page dedicated to it. For ex. you are running a mobile phone related site. You already have reviews of different mobile phones on that site in different pages. Then you can add some more HTML pages on the site about reviews of upcoming mobile phones or about phone not previously reviewed. This will increase your content and you will get a separate page targeting these particular mobile phone.

Adding a blog is another thing and it must be used to add interesting information about your industry. Suppose you can write blog posts about mobile phone hacks, tips about using mobile phones, tips to make battery of mobile last longer and such things on your blog. You need not to make a separate page on your site about these topics on your main site. Keep this information in blog so that people will find it interesting to read and finally it will help your main site.

Adding a forum is also a good option but it will give you benefit only if you make your forum popular and widely use. Moreover forums threads are not content rich.

Hope you can decide what approach is best for you. :)

I can second what has been said about blogging. The blog shouldn't be the focal point of your site, but it can make it more interesting and even provide valuable content that others are looking for. You just have to decide how much time it's worth creating new content and writing.

Keep adding html pages + a blog to the domain is what works best for me.
Make sure you have a decent site structure and all your important pages are linked well enough.
It do wonders for onpage SEO :)

if your reader/user base can justify the use of a forum, then by all means go right ahead. otherwise adding a blog to the domain is a great idea which will add fresh content to the site. when you add a forum or blog, make sure you use siteurl.com/blog URL format and not blog.siteurl.com as subdomains are considered as seperate entity

Add a blog then use Google trends to keep updating it, I find this is by far the best way of doping things.

Take advantage of the niche blog's capability to attract visitors. With frequent posts about your chosen subject area or field of expertise, you will see an increase in the number of visitors in your site.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. I will initiall start adding html pages and at same time look to add a blog as a sub folder on the domain.

    Thanks

Add a few RSS feeds to your blog and if you don't want to pass link-juice set up a redirection at your domain or use a referrer anonymizer service.

create a blog farm of auto-updating sites to pass PR and backlinks to you REAL site. Put quality handwritten stuff on your real site. Couple of times a week will do. That will then look VERY natural to the engines, who will favor you.

If you want to get your site visited frequently then add a page a day to your site. The search engines love a growing site.

I have recently set up a new site with a blog that I host on my server and I am finding that Google is placing more importance on my blog page than on my home page. The top 3 keywords/phrases all point to the blog page and all the blog contains are small articles about pages in my site!!!

adding images into your blog can also help you drive visitors from google image search. You need to make sure you title the images correctly. also use alt tags.

I would personally opt-in to write regularly on my Blog which would be under ".com/Blog" Category with footer links with anchor text pointing towards my home page or to the page i want serps for.
