Very Serious Issue: Adblock is killing Adsense slowly, day by day

The problem with the adblock extension and the decreasing earnings for adsense owners is becoming worse every day.

Here is what I have figured out.

Pageviews according to my stats: ~16000 (they are views by real human visitors, not spiders, bots etc.)

Ad views according to adsense: ~6000

Where have been the rest 10000 views? They are probably users with the Adblock or Noscript firefox extension.

Some years ago before the Adblock extension appeared, there was no such difference. I was seeing the same numbers between my stats system and Adsense stats. So, the reason for this change today is obvious.

And this gap between pageviews and ad views is becoming larger every day.

I'm afraid that we have to do something... Write to the Adblock creators? Write to Google?

Adblock will bring the end of Adsense (and other advertising networks)

If only one of us sends a mail to Adblock creators or to Google nothing will happen. But if we act all together there is some hope.

    What do you think?

It is not preinstalled, but even Mozilla Foundation suggests it when you visit the addons site.

It is in the list with the suggested extensions on the first page of Firefox extensions.

I am not against Firefox. I have been using it since 2002 (when it was called Phoenix) and I am still great fan of it. My problem (and the problem for all of us I think...) is the Adblock extension.

This system will not change. It is something that we have to live with. I know I hate going to a site myself then damn a full page ad or a pop up or those site say congratulations you have won a wii nintento those are very annoying. So more and more people that feel the same way will block the ads. You got to put the blame on the advertiser's and the publishers that add that crap. When I see those ads that talk at adbrite I reject them so my visitors just get plane image and text ads.

I consider AdBlock like stealing. Websites are made free to view thanks to ads, and ads are the user's ways of 'paying' for the content. If you are blocking the ads, it's like watching a movie without paying for it. You are using the webmaster's content, and the webmaster get's no compensation for it.

Only if there was a method to automatically detect Adblock users and display a message to them. With my Javascript and PHP programming experience I try to create a script.
Maybe displaying a blank page, saying "we are sorry but you cannot view our site if you use adblock".

Personally, I think that visitors who use firefox and have the "know how" to install plugins/add-ons are a little more web savvy and less likely to click on adsense ads anyway. Sure, you might miss out on some revenue from these users but I doubt it's anything too substantial and I wouldn't lose any sleep over it. I don't use adblock because I like to see how other webmasters present their ads. I can also count the number of times on one hand which I've clicked someones adsense ad.

It sucks indeed, but they were talking about the new AdBlock version, that owners could add a sort of meta tag that the Adblock addon spots, than they will ask in a bar (like there is shown when there is a popup blocked): "The owner of this website monetizes his website through ads, would you like to turn Adblock off?'

So than we might have more people not-using it again, but it's not sure :(

Yes, even if it happens, Google will find the way to win. Maybe a new way of displaying the ads, instead of iframes? Just a though...
This is why I think we should contact them before it is too late. I am sure they are aware of the problem but I believe they have not realized how serious it will become in the near future.

Using MooTools, you can use this code to detect AdBlock:

Google is the primary investor in Firefox. Google is not stupid. They also have this little browser called Chrome. If Firefox extensions truly pose a danger to Google's revenue... Google will "fix" the problem.

One constant about the Internet is ... change is a daily occurrence. If you look at who has purchased all the independent Advertising Companies you see two trends.... Google and Microsoft... and then the company that manages to ruin acquisitions ... Yahoo.

None of these companies care about you. They are in business for themselves. Google is the only one currently smart enough to embrace the massive low cost labor force of webmasters.

As the Internet Evolves... there will be new technologies to leverage advertising and new technologies to fight advertising. Its all about the money. And all you can do is adapt and change.

And isn't it a good coincidence that chrome doesn't support plugins like firefox does? ;)

I think you may have a good case here matey. What needs to happen is that these ad blockers need to be blocked from accessing your site. I am pretty sure a mod like this will be available soon.

I wrote an article about this recently, I think it's an important issue with webmasters that is seriously being overlooked.

The War Between Ad Blockers and Webmasters
