It seems Google is updating PR thing frequently, just like Alexa Rank or other Ranking Tools, PR will be updating in short intervals/time (IMO) May be to kill the Paid Links Market at all.

I heard that Google has changed algorithm to calculate. Could it be a reason behind PR drop?

This is not really a big deal. Google has announced that nofollow links are no longer in effect. Now, theoretically, our page profiles should be giving link juice to our URLs. With so many users on DP, I could see how that would drain the PR.

PR sculpting is going to become a lot less effective as time goes on.
SEOMOZ has a good post on it.

People keep saying PR doesn't matter for ages, now DP's PR dropped and it's a big deal again?

PR dosn't always mean (this is a great site)
so don't judge DB by it's PR :)

i know MANY lousy sites with PR 8
and i know very useful sites with PR 1

i don't care for PR if i like this forum or that :)

Absolutely true. Now there is no any fixed time interval between each PR updates because since last few months google updating PR every now and then  Must be there is something tricky in their mind about PR thingy.

Well, it usually means one thing when this happens to me: google caught the site selling links. But dp does not do that!

Yes, Google has been updating and shuffling for a couple of months now, but not only PR. It is also updating listings and so forth. Either this isw a very long update, or it is going to be a regular thing with G. But, Isuspect that many site's PR has droped, and their listing shuffled around. Mine has jumped all over the place for the last couple of months and didn't get any stationary listings in the first couple of pages until 3 weeks ago. ;)

Don't worry though. DP will level out soon. Most sites usually do towards the end of the updating process.

IMO it were the slow loading of DP pages, downtime and database errors the cause of this.

Does it really matter? New threads do not have PR.
