I've heard that most people use google over any other search engine. Does anyone know the percentages of the main search engines as far as how many people use them?

They seem to be on the internet research sites I publish, funny thing is that we are starting to get a lot from my.member.msn and when I click on the link it takes me to a log in page so I can not see the search.

MSN is not going to give us the data from these searches.

If Google can get folks to adopt Google Desktop they will keep their lead.

The OS war is the search war and if folks quit using M$ Windows OS Google will be number 1 for a long time.

Below is a story about a year old that will give you more information.

I use MSN now, it gives me more of what I want, google is slipping away from just searching. But when I want pictures, I use google, it gets alot better results. :D

Not to mention, the MSNBot lists more entries than Inktomi or Googlebot.

I still get more than 90% of my traffic from google, though MSN traffic is increasing, which in my opinion is a good thing. I'd like to see Yahoo doing more to pull it's weight also.

That is good news, I always have wondered why Yahoo has not promoted the brands they have more.

They are no doubt foolish not to promote "AlltheWeb" and "AltaVista" as separate brand names

You can always check your own server logs to see how most people get to your site. Different topics bring in different users, and different users use different search engines.

Surprisingly enough with about the same amount of traffic as last month we are getting a different percentage of search engine referrals.
For us, Yahoo! is actually referring more users to us this month so far ...
    Yahoo 34.7 %
    Google 31.6 %
    MSN 14.8 %
    Google (Images) 11.2 %
    AOL 1.9 %
    Ask Jeeves 1.5 %

I think this is mainly due to Google dropping us in rankings since my backlinks went down and we recently (Jan) changed our design and URLs. Yahoo! and MSN seem to update more frequently. We are getting more visits from Yahoo! and MSN's spiders than Google this month.

    The most important engine?

The one you don't rank in the top 10 on. (That is were your focus should be.) But if you don't rank on any - start with google but make sure you know a little about msn and yahoo so they can start ranking also.

87% of traffic which goes to my sites is from Google. And I use Google for search because it gives more relevant results than other search engines.

95% of the traffic generated from my target keywords comes directly from the first page of google. This does not mean that your presence in bing/yahoo ect should be neglected. Go for them all.

Yes, Google is the most important search engine. 70% of traffic comes form Google only. If we optimize our web page into Google, it will also get rank well in other major search engines
