Buying an old site but starting fresh - what do do about old links?

Discussion in 'Search Engine Optimization' started by Chris Guthrie, Jun 11, 2009.

I'm buying a domain name from someone that they haven't used in 3 years. There are a bunch of links to the various articles, but the content is so irrelevant now that I'd like to just start over.

What should I do about the old links? Is there any way to capture all the links somehow and redirect to the homepage? How do I find what articles are linked?

First time doing this one for me so I'd appreciate some help.

    Thanks!

Not sure but somewhere there is a list of backlinks to the site. I have searched mine and found the number. I know cPanel will show the back links (I think) but not sure if they will find them if not current. My 2 cents.

Check with your Google Webmaster tool. You can remove your unwanted pages from the domain and backlinks.

Try and contact some of the owners of the sites with the links and ask them to take them down. Truth is they will fade by themselves over time, as webmasters realize the content is not relevant anymore.

Why don't you customise your 404 'not found' page or redirect from it to your home page?
