Keyword Ranking - How Long Will It Take You..?

    Hey all,

    Keyphrase: halloween pumpkin carving

    Anchor Results: 35,400 (with quotations)

    Standard Results: 313,000 (without quotations)

It's a decent long-tail keyword with relatively moderate search volume. Your search results may vary depending on which country you are making the search query, but it should be near mine. Anyhow, there are several long URL's which rank for the keywords, but most of the results only have the keyphrase in title and some have it in meta description.

Assuming you just bought a 1 year old halloween related domain (not dropped and no established links):

    A) What kind of Link Building and/or Optimization would you do to rank near enough #1 for this particular keyphrase?

    B) How long do you 'think' it may take you?

Not a very difficult question. Yes, I know there are a million different variables, but I've tried to make the hypothetical situation as simple and straightforward as possible - so throw an opinion and let's compare results?

    Cheers guys! :)

i would use directory submission and article submission for this. my country is UK and the average global searches is 9000/month (according to google adwords tool).

this would be pretty easy to break the top 10 with, assuming the landing page was SEO optimised.

Not easy to answer with a short analysis, the number of competition is not very high, but there are PR5+4 pages with more than 1000 links on top spots.

Anyway their onpage optimization seems not really targetting that exact term. With good onpage optimization and some PR2-3 links I think it could be possible within 2-3 month; sometimes Google surprises you by doing it this way in a couple of weeks, depending on crawl rate for your site and the sites you place your links.

What type of PR2-3 links do you have in mind? Will a couple PR2-3 "Directories" do the work..?

Or how about buying one of those 1000+ PR 2-8 Directory submission services offered here on DP? I'm thinking 4 weeks wait..

I would use High PR backlinks and Press Release Distribution! Also make sure your coding is up to par.
See you on the first page.

These are the steps I would take.
    1. On page optimization.
    2. Buy a couple of links PR3-4 related to halloween, crafts, or food.
    3. Start blog commenting, I would spend about an hour or two a day for 2 weeks.
By the end of the two weeks google should have found the paid links and would start to see the blog links. By then I would expect to be at least on the 3rd page and I would be able to gauge how many more links I would need to buy. You should be abel to get in top 10 before halloween.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think (1) is a quick job and (3) can be outsourced for cheap, but (2) is the tricky and sometimes expensive one. Heck, if I was targetting 20+ longtail keyphrases as such, buy relevant (competitor) links would put be in serious debt! I was hoping for a low/moderate competition, long-tail keyword, it would be easier. I would have thought the following should work:

    A) 10 unique article submissions.
    B) 500 directory submissions.
    C) 100 social bookmarks.
    D) 20 relevant blog comments.

Surely, the above should be more than enough for "halloween pumpkin carving"...?

Check the top 50 sites and find out which ones of those will allow links on those pages. Get those links and you'll have a huge advantage.

I would have thought the above suggestions would be enough to rank for that phrase. Perhaps cut down on the directory submissions and focus on getting a couple of high quality links but with a couple of decent links and blog comments / article submissions then you should be fine.

I'd try that and then see where that gets the site before deciding how else to try to rank. Either way you definitely have time to obtain a good ranking before Halloween.

I would build a really nice page (well-written content, attractive graphical layout.. maybe some demo videos if possible, printable overlays to carve on the pumpkins, etc)... then I would build some HubPages & Squidoo pages or approach the top pages on both those sites and offer the authors some incentive to post a link to this site. Then, I'd go find a blogger and ask them to mention the site, possibly in exchange for some sort of incentive (if not money, perhaps a product they'd like to review... if you give reviewers gifts in exchange for mentions as sponsoring what they just reviewed.. that's a nice linkback)...

Just a couple suggestions, but I think that'd build rank the fastest, personally. I also would prefer a new domain rather than an older domain. :)

Do the usual linkbuilding methods to optimize your site like forum posting, article submission, link exchange, etc.. If you want to outrank your competition, you should be persistent. The actual results in ranking usually happen after 4-6 months of hardwork.

I guess the most powerful links as far as contemporary SEO goes, is getting links from "relevant" sites/pages. i.e: if I were to get only links from 'halloween' related sites, I'd rank much faster than doing all that junk; directories, forums posting, article submissions, blog commeting etc..

However, it is damn DIFFICULT getting links from your competitors. Even if my site has good quality material, if they see ads on the site, they're much less likely to want to give me a link! Besides, a lot of them won't even open my email..

Absolutely true mate it is damn difficult but SEO is not a game and it's not easy and shouldn't be, it sucks but it's true. So do this, I'm not sure how many people you have going to your site currently, so I'll assume little say less then 50/day. Disable all the advertisements (keep affiliate products but no adsense, Kontera etc), work on getting established. Keep sending out emails keep writing out quality articles. A lot of medical sites have very high PR's so write an article about how pumpkin carving causes so and so many amputated fingers each year and how to prevent it. Now contact the medical sites and say hey I got this article check it out, consider publishing it I think it's really important. If you want to really get some attention contact writers by email through news paper websites, la times, Washington post, local papers and say look at these alarming figures would you consider publishing this.

That's about all I can offer you mate. In the end do not give up, it does take a while but once your up there it's a good ride ;).

    Not that difficult guys!

    Aricle posting
    Social bookmarking
    Text links
    Press release
    Squidoo
    Hubpages
    Blog reviews

As for the time, depends on your website! On mine, not long! I rank for nice keywords in matters of hours or days!

    Cheers!
