My user name is Busygal and I am always getting the Dear Sir heading. Go figure. I thought gal means girl, but I guess now a days a gal can be either male or female. Personally I think men just don't think about those things. They have tunnel vision and are just focused on what they are trying to accomplish. Maybe we need to address them with Dear Madam, them maybe they would get it. I don't know. What do you think?
I have heard of the WAHM forums, but I don't have kids also a large part of the subject matter there is Avon, Amway, and Melaleuca which doesn't appeal to me. I like talking about Webmastering and I'm sure there are a ton of other women who also do. I'm sure there is a larger percentage of women on DP than DPers think there are. Personally, I think it's a higher percentage... but then again I read OPs and look at usernames. Most of the PMs I get are from people who can't even read an OP so why should I expect them to really get anything right.
I think that would be very funny!! I might try it! Next time someone calls me mate/dude/sir, I will reply with chick/Ma'am/lady.
Ahem... allow me to express my woes too. The last time I called KFC and placed an order, the girl on the other end of the line was like "Anything else ma'am?" I admit to my voice being a bit squeaky (I never fully got over that puberty thingy) but no sane person could mistake my voice for a gal. AND this once I was picking out jewelery at a store... the saleswoman walks up to me and said "May I help you ma'am?" Immediately followed by apologies explaining how they never have male customers and hence she got used to saying "ma'am" And I guess what I'm trying to say is.. I understand if you girls are irked
I am always taken for a guy online, always - no matter my user name as well. Sure, this one is unisex, but even with a female one its assumed I am guy most the time. I'm used to it now, and when I get called 'dude/sir' etc most the time I just ignore it
If 39% of Digital Point members are female, we should be addressing everybody as Sir or Madam. Our numbers are growing. I won't be surprised if there will be 50% female members in 2 or 3 months time.
It's cool knowing there are female webmasters, but there are so many famous male webmasters, does anyone know any famous women webmasters ? apart from melbel obviously
Ah, good ol' myth that only males are on computers/internet related forums. Or, they dont wanna mistaken and say 'Madam' to some bloke, most of them would go homophobic crazy! And they all think and know that we females are more polite so we are not going to rip their head off if they call us 'Sir'.
As the new gal, I haven't got this issue yet, but I'm sure I will... What do you reckon we should do though? Like start every post with I AM A GIRL...? I don't know. Just don't ask me to cyber. Bleargh...
Everyone involved in this thread needs to read this: http://www.incomediary.com/top-30-female-internet-entrepreneurs/
The thing is a lot of guys use female pictures on their avatars. It gets them more attention. As a guy (personally speaking) I'd rather reply to a nice looking chick than a guy. You shouldn't be offended. Most guys would rather reply to a lady than a guy, except the gay ones of course. I get replys from a lot of female avatars with names like Danny,Ronnie,Mark, and I'm surprised that its not a woman.
Well that's because there is no-one "in" the Internet. The series of tubes that make up the Internet would get clogged if there were people in it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f99PcP0aFNE Start listening at 2:10
