I've had this list for some time now and I've always wondered, if I build an Adwords advice type site, put Adsense on it, and drive traffic to it, it will really pay that highly, or around that, per click?

    No you wont.

The AdWords system is a real time auction called a Vickrey Auction. In a Vickrey auction, the highest bidder only has to pay whatever the second highest bidder bid.

    For example:
    Bidder A bids $1.04
    Bidder B bids $2.16
    Bidder C bids $0.55

In this case bidder B wins but he only has to pay the second highest bid, in this case $1.04. In many auctions, there will be a large gap between the highest bid and second highest bid so the price will be much lower than expected. If it turns out that there are 2 bidders both trying to be high bid then the actual cost of winning the auction will be close to the bid price. From the advertisers point of view this is not good and the winner will often drop their bid and force the other guy to pay the price for future auctions.

But it gets even more complicated. Let us assume that Bidder A has an good ads that has a 2% click thru rate, Bidder B has a average ads with a CTR of 1% and Bidder C has very good ads with a 4% click thru rate. In this example, Bidder C wins.

    Let me explain.

The auctions are not conducted in dollars and cents; they are conducted in "units". A unit is defined as the bid price times the Click Thru Rate. Therefore, our bid table now looks like:

Bidder A acutally bids 2.08 "units"
Bidder B actually bids 2.16 "units"
Bidder C actually bids 2.20 "units"

Bidder C is now highest and has to pay Bidder A's price. But we have a problem, Bidder C has indicated that the highest they are willing to pay is $0.55 but the winning bid requires a payment of $1.04, how does Google solve this problem? Getting back to our "units", we use the winning bid and divide by the click thru rate. In this case its 2.08 / 4 or $0.52.

There are other reasons as well:

There are multiple ads in each ad unit and a separate auction is conducted for each ad. As you move down the ad unit, the price paid by the advertiser goes down.

Just because you have high paying keywords on your page, that does not mean that that all the ads on your page are related to those keywords. They could be for other, lower paying, keywords on your site. Only Google knows how they allocate ads between pages

Google needs to make a profit as well. They keep a percentage for themselves, and that percentage can vary from site to site. Google has never published what that rate is but it is believed by experts to be around 50%.

Generally you will only get a fraction of what these lists show.

Don't play the "high paying keywords" game, just write content about topics you know and can keep writing and keep writing about...in the long run it'll work better.
