From 1-10 (1 meaning valueless and 10 meaning it is the most important part), how important is a domain name in SEO?

how much better off would something like watchthesimpsonsonlinefree.com compared to wtso.net (for example)?

I will rate it 10 coz keyword is important in SEO.
But in your example its totally out of order.
Technically watchthesimpsonsonlinefree.com is good for SEO coz it contain the keyword that crawl by G,but due to some reason such as hard to remember by user then it not a viable domain selection.

I would agree that the first one in my example is difficult for users to remember, but in terms of attracting new search traffic, it seems easier?

    i rate 10.

If the domain contained keyword that you want to optimize, it will have better rank than those without keyword.

I'd say '6'. Having exact keyword which you're targeting helps to some extent but it is not most important thing. You can use a generic domain and still rank high in SERPs.
