I am may cause a rumble in the water but I have to disagree with you. They are not scams at all, people just assume they're scams because you can get all the information yourself free on the internet. You wouldn't call a Wedding Planner a Con Artist but they charge for what you can do for arrange yourself.

I bought one over 1 year ago and all the surveys I could join were listed in a database so i didn't have to do any searching. I have signed up with all the companies that pay money or vouchers and although they exaggerate how much you can make I have being making money - plus if you're from the US you can much more (I'm from the UK).

I personally enjoy completing the surveys and the more you do the more surveys you get in return. I just received a cheque for £26 last week. Just wanted to give my opinion!

Though I would suggest you not to pay $34 to get a database of online survey sites, I agree that there are some good paid survey sites that really do pay.

You are not going to get rich by taking surveys. But you may get some extra cash and occassionally some big prizes from draws. Try joining the reputed companies like Ipsos, NPD, NFO, Surveysavvy, Brand Institute, ACOP, globaltestmarket, Lightspeed and Synovate - they are all free to join
Check out http://www.internetpaidsurveys.com for more links to free survey sites

Do not pay them anything because they are outright Scams and Frauds.

Why would they want you to pay them if they are going to pay you more anyway? Thats just stupid

Whilst I agree they aren't always scams the two points that need to be considered are:
    1. As you mentioned, they tend to greatly exaggerate potential income just to sell their guides and
    2. More importantly there are many free directories giving the same information. I personally like http://www.whichsurveys.com which lists companies by country and goes into great detail about each survey company but there are many others including http://www.yellowsurveys.com/ and http://www.internetpaidsurveys.com/
