Well if your going to take it out of context... of course it isn't.

I was explaining to jg123 about the secret of how they were able to say "we guarantee a page 1 presence, and you won't pay until you are" and remain a successful, profitable company.

And it wasn't just using long tale keywords. It was about:

    a) Working closely with us.

    b) Identifying APPROPRIATE long tale keywords using Wordtracker data.

    c) Choosing and decided which keywords to use based on level of competition, profit margins and appropriateness to budget.

    d) How to optimise the site to attract these specific keywords.

Now to me and you, long tale keywords is a normal everyday word. But to a company who is new to SEO.... yeah.... it was a secret... and we paid money to find out what it was.... learn from it... and make the business more profitable.

"bundled polyethylene fuel tank" has zero competition and even without quotes it has only competition of 6k, seems to be a useless term to rank for and you could probably do it with 2 low quality links.

So, this company got you two low quality back links and ranked for a zero competition term and then you paid them? How much did you pay them?

    There is a magic bullet...

Getting in bed with Google. If the company/site you are working on is large enough that it could be potentailly profitable for them to make money off you adwording on their search results they may bump you up the search reasults.

That's a guess, but a logical one...if you were Google, you would offer special arrangements to large corporations.

What you said is exactly why I will never beleive in the "pay me $400 to get ranked #1 on google" scheme.

Think about it: wouldn't it be a LOT more beneficial for these people to get THEMSELVES ranked #1 on google, than to do it for someone ELSE, for a measly $400?

Well to be honest with you it was a example off the top of my head for the purposes of the conversation and the point I was making. I can't really remember if "bunded polyethylene fuel tank" was one of them or not. I havn't worked at this company for two years now so my memory really isn't that great. :)

Though saying that, I remember some of the keywords varied massive in regards to competition and traffic amount. There is no shame in ranking well for less popular terms, because money can be made from optimising a lot of the smaller terms, as well a few of the more competitive and popular terms.

Anyway to answer your question, the company were paid £500 to place 10 keywords (which they helped choose) on the first page of Google. The agreement was that they would be paid when this occured and that they would advise us on how to maintain these keywords.

Now to a company who have NEVER DONE SEO BEFORE this is very fair deal. And it worked beautifully. The company got the ten keywords we chose onto page 1, I got my first taste of SEO, and the company I worked for increased their income.

To summarise the point I was making originally was that you shouldn't believe in any magic promises, because there are SEO companies out there who will work on a "pay per result" criteria.

There is no secret. SEO is all about the number of and the quality of the backlinks. It is good to write daily blogs which feed links to the site you want to promote. This is best done as an organic process over a period of time.

    Few responces to this:

    1) You say its "incredibly easy to rank for page 1 on Google." Well to you and me its easy to get to page one of Google, but if you are inexperienced company with no SEO knowledge (who I was working for at the time), you would'nt know where to begin.

    2) I know you were being spurious but; Don't do it for free. If you can get keywords to page one its a skill that people will pay for. So why don't you offer this to some local small companies? You may earn a bit of pocket money :)

    3) "I can get you to the first page of google as long as the search term has 0 searches a month and no one has optimized and built links for the keywords. That is what I am guessing these guys are offering to optimize your website."

Nope. We chose the keywords with their advice (i.e. if they felt a keyword was too competitive they would recommend against it). In fact they make money in repeat business so it was in their interest to rank my old company in terms that would make us money.

Theme based web sites seem to do well. There is controversy over whether Google uses the Latent Semantic Indexing principle but from what I have found with my own web sites, tightly themed web sites using a variety of 'expert' expressions related to your main keyword can get your page well ranked.

Quality content and a little patience. Just some basic SEO knowledge can go along way. Descriptive headlines work very well for individual posts.
