Long tail keywords are just longer and more targeted keywords that people type into the SEs. These keywords tend to have lesser competition but have good search volume.

ah rite i think i get what your saying, so an example would be something like insted of using lose weight a long tail would be... "how can i loose weight by combining diet and exercise"

Yes that would be considered a long tail keyword, but since it is so long it likely doesn't get many searches. A good long tail keyword can still send a steady stream of traffic. Here is a squidoo lens I just made about long tail keywords.

    Example...
Instead of having the keyword "cigars" or "smoking cigars" you would have something like "how to smoke cigars".

Basically it's a narrower keyphrase. The idea is that when people use search engines they don't just type cigars but may be looking for something more specific.

Market Samurai is a cool tool for generating long tails. The keyword portion is free. Or you can just use the free Google Keyword tools.

A longtail keywords are combination of your keyword forming a phrase to taget a more specific search result, using a longtail allows you to narrow down any search into your own like. What I mean is, if your looking for a product, let's say it a product from ralph lauren, you would just type in "ralph lauren"(already a keyword) into the searchbox, but you want to get the results of "ralph laure" polo for men only... A longtail keyword for it is, "ralph lauren polos for men"... this will narrow your search results...

    Magic,

    but really.

I think longtail keywords are integral to the future growth of search advertising. If we aren't able to target the users more specific searches then conversions are going to drop.

Most people literally sit around and think of them on their own. Ok lets say you got a site about building muscle. When you go to a search engine, what would YOU type in the search engine? "how to build muscle" "muscle building tips" "ways to improve muscle mass" and so on. You can then take these into a tool, like gtrends at wordtracker, and use that to make more longtain keywords.

Long tail keywords are typically 3 to 4 words. They are good to target because they bring laser targeted traffic and they are less competitive. The problem is that on their own they don't generate huge search volume so you need to optimize for a lot of them!

I have also read that long tail keywords usually imply more of an "intent to buy" or "commercial viability" as it's sometimes called. This will improve your conversion rate which is the ultimate goal.

Long tail phrases should come naturally depending on the type of site.
