What blogging platform are you using? If Wordpress or MoveableType, I would definitely recommend installing Akismet: http://akismet.com/

Just activate it with your API key and it should stop almost all spam comments- they will be unlive and in a separate folder in your dashboard.

edit: You can also go to settings>discussion and set your preferences with comments containing links (you can set it so that a comment with a certain number of links go straight to moderation instead of appearing live)

Install the ReCaptcha modification for wordpress. You can find it at wordpress.org. To use the modification, you will have to create an account at the recapthca homepage - but its a free account.

On another blogging forum I am a member of, this guy posted he was getting around 500 spam comments a week. Once he installed the recaptcha modification, the spam stopped.

The only spam that I find gets through Akismet (with API key entered) appears to be Russian. Annoying but I handle it when I get a real comment and only remove it then. For some reason Akismet hasn't learnt Russian.

WP Spam free. Set Admin Discussion Settings to:

Comment Author Must Fill out name and email
    Anyone can post
    Comment held for moderation
    Administrator must always approve

You don't want to make it so hard that no one can post.

Definitely give WP Spam-Free a shot. Akismet will just fill up with spam that it catches, but WP Spam-Free will deter bot-spam completely as it uses JavaScript and other ways that bots don't handle.

Well that doesn't have to do with the fact that it is Russian- it just doesn't know of that url. The best thing to do is mark it as spam so that in the future it gets caught.

I do, but domains are cheap and they change them frequently.

As for akismet clogging up, disk space is cheap too, and it drops the spam after 30 days. I can live with that overhead.

One thing that you could do would be to make all the links on your blog no-follow. That woud definitely keep out a large segment of the spam population.
