I am thinking of submitting articles to get backlinks. Just wondering weather the Google Penalise you when you Submit the same article to different directries? Thanks in advance
It is called "duplicate content" and gets the page it's on GrayBarred. The question is if the links on the page are counted. I don't think so.
Sorry catanich, but that is not true. Duplicate content does not get a page grey barred. A large percentage of websites online have some type of duplicate content. They do not all get automatically penalized. Google accepts that sites can have duplicate content. I believe Matt Cutts released a video clip about this issue a little while back. You should still avoid duplicate content, but it won't necessarily get you penalized. In the case of submitting articles, just submit unique articles that are not on your website and you would have nothing at all to worry about. Many people submit the exact same article to hundreds of article directories without a problem. All of those backlinks help your rankings across all major search engines.
You are not "Penalised" in the regular sense...Google just igore the duplicate content...thus you get ZERO benefit from it!
It is not true to say you get ZERO benefit. I wouldn't call rankings on MSN & Yahoo as zero benefit. Also Google indexes many copies of the exact same article. Try Googling the title of a distributed article in quotes. So there is a good chance that Google is still crediting those links even though they are on a page that is primarily duplicate content.
According to Matt Cutts, duplicate contents are okay, as long as it's not on your domain with the intention to trick search engine, even a small amount of duplicate contents are okay (say, pages with the same title tags). As for duplicate contents outside of your site. It CANNOT hurt you. Otherwise people will be taking out some blackhat software like Xumer, and blast their competitor's links to millions of site. Why bother building links ethically when you can punish your competitors? This isn't how Google works. Google algorithm also factor in Google bomb, in which people do SEO to rank say, a friend they want to mess with, #1 for keywords like "talentless hack" by blasting anchor text links to milliions of site. Used to be able to do that, now Google can are better at discounting those links. Google looks at your size, age, and historical link acquisition pattern, and tries to see which links you recently gained. If they find bunch of identical contents, say from article submission, they roll in all the page rank juice, and the relevancy score to whichever article has the most authority score. And the duplicates are hidden, but they can't hurt your ranking. This way Google will only show a few of the same articles in SERP, even if there are hundreds indexed by google So article spinning comes about, to make google believe that there are more contents that are unique. But Google is getting smarter, and they are stacking similiar articles too! So your articles, once spun, will appear in more results from SERP, other than that, if you just want the backlinks, makes very little difference whether or not you spin your articles.
there's no 'penalty' as such, it just won't help you. The reason why is explained here -duplicate content myth
Duplicate content will not penalize your site, all Google do is degrade the value of duplicate content in the SERPs. But its not a good thing to submit your content all over and over, its better to submit it to one good directory and promote that article. Likewise keep creating new quality content and promoting them.
Thanks Jihoy - That's extremely informative. In short, are you recommending that we just pick a few key top article directories and just submit to them if we want to improve our SEO/backlinks vs. submitting to a whole list of directories?
It's called a duplicate content when you are using the content on every day basis, like you have some content and you are posting it on some directory one day then you are posting it on another on some other day that content is called duplicate, but if you are submitting the same content with same name in a single day to various directories that is not the duplicate content, thats what i think and i have applied as well. Thanks
