What's the best way to redirect traffic from .com

Let's say i have 2 versions of website

.com and .ca, .com targeting US while .ca targeting Canada

.com ranks much higher on a lot of key terms and therefore we often have canadian shoppers land on .com. we would be lucky if they go ahead and order stuff(we can just move the order to .ca). But we know a lot of people just left the site because they thought products are only for US.

What is a proper way to redirect traffic in this case? I am thinking of doing a front entry page let them choose between .com and .ca, but considering 75% of visitors are from US, we don't want more distraction.

Is there a software detecting the ip of user? so it would nice if it is detected that the visit is from Canada, then a popup box asking them to shop on .ca. If it is from US, then no action will be triggered. Is this a good option? Are there any other options you would recommend? thank you

What you have suggested makes a lot of sense.

Top of my mind, I can't recall a software that can do this. Howevere, here's an innovative solution that should work fine for your need.

Google has a free Advertisement management tool called Google AdManager. You can configure it to serve different ADs depending on various parameters, including the location of the user.

We can use this feature innovatively - you can have an AD spot on your site at a prominant location. When users from Canada come, it can display a message requesting them to click and go to the .ca site. To all other users, you can display an AD (in house / AdSense / anything!) or a different message!

I think this can be a good (and free!) solution to your problem!
