Is it acceptable to submit the same article to multiple sites? Would google pick this up and penalize you for it?

It is better to submit uniques versons of the article to different directories. However google does not penalise duplicate content so the links will still count.

Read google sblog it explains more there about how they deal with duplicate content but they certainly dont penalise a website for it.

    Hello,

It is accepted. You may submit the same article to different article directories without getting banned by google.
Its better to submit a unique article rather than a normal one.

    regards

there is no penalty for having duplicate content on 3rd party sites. however, depending on how many sites you submit the same article to, all the pages where your article is published may not get indexed. google finds out the source of the original content and keeps that page indexed. the rest of the pages with duplicate content simply get trapped within duplicate content filter and never get indexed (or get removed from indexing later on)

Sure, you can submit an article to many article directories. Many of them would be filtered out for duplicate content but there is no penalty for this.

I only submit the same article to max 3 directories and I don't have problems with that.

The best strategy is to submit fresh content for each submission but if you have to submit the same perhaps to 5-10 different directories, i think you should make some changes to some of its content and keywords to make the article unique and get better results.

I suggest you use this list of article directories, and I suggest you to submit the same article to maximum 5 directories, then re-write the article, and so on.

They will not penilize you for it, they just don't give a duplicate content link the same weight as a unique link.

I can tell than since November 2008 I don't see any harm while submitting same articles to different websites. Of course this article has to be unique :) You could change only a title.
