I want to create an online store to sell digital items with instant downloads. What are the best scripts to use, free and pay? Thanks.

Well some may or may not agree.. But I've had some pretty good luck with Cubecart.
    http://www.cubecart.com/

It's a breeze to install and maintain.. If you can afford a good theme for it you can pretty much get by with the Free version. The branding doesn't seem to hurt any of the sites i use it on.

Also there's a pretty good community behind it. Lots of trial and error stuff to be found on there forums.

    I started off with zencart.
I have so much customization in it now that I doubt the developers would recognize it though.

It handles pretty much whatever you need and if you know php or have a developer the code is straight forward.

It does handle downloads, monitoring, most merchant accounts, paypal, etc..

i would recommend oscommerce sine it has all the function you need but it is not really user friendly though. you need sometime to get used to it.

When you're learning about something new, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer amount of relevant information available. This informative article should help you focus on the central points of opening an online store.

romant cart if you already have a website. you just need to add the links to shopping cart(which is hosted on romancart servers)

or oscommerce if you dont have your own site or template

hmm.. check out www.ec21.com, it is one good b2b global marketplace to start with. You can register for free and get an account over there and plus, you can have your own homepage. I got an account over there and I regularly receive a certain amount of buying inquiries. worth to visit.

    Hi

I too am looking for something to so same and tried magento which seems fine. But I have one issue - Actually I am just selling some 5-6 things and somehow magento etc look a little heavy. Can anyone suggest something similar, but light weight. So some free script which just shows 5-6 items on front page with checkout. (Iwas also thinking of trying WP plugin...

How about DigiVendorPro? (Also the cheaper DigiVendor)

I use his PHPHostBot, it's not great, but it's cheaper than others and does exactly what I need it to.

I prefer cms which support single page checkout or instant checkout
so you can checkout without register first
as far I know now there're digistore, zenmagick, and ubercart from drupal

I think Oscommerce is one of the best software for ecommerce. I have used it for many of my clients.
