    Hi...just wanted to know about the concept of backlinks..n how do they effect the website or promotion of a certain product etc...how does one go about having effective backlinks..is there something that one needs to look out for...any guideance on these lines would be helpful

    The better site [higher PR, authority etc] then the link counts more. 1 link from PR7 site counts more than 50 from PR0.

    Backlinks are a link to your site from another site. For example, many of us have links in our signatures.....that is a back link. They affect search engine rankings and how popular your site is. Look for sites that have a higher alexa/PR than yours so they count more. Like the op mentioned, a back link from a high PR site counts a lot more than 100 from a low PR site.

    High Page Rank backlinks from a dofollow site are extremely valuable. They give your site high PR and boosts your organic search results.

    backlinks affect how well you list on google--- the more QUALITY backlinks you have the better. People say its better to have PR7 than PR4 but this has always been controversial and not fully confirmed
