Geocities surely was one of the many significant player for internet development and no one can deny that. Most webmasters actually began their career there so it sure is sad bad news. On the other hand, maybe they will offer something new like Geocountries or Geoplanets or Geohoo! ;)

Back in 2000 or 2001 when I was taking a website developer class in college, one of our projects was to build a website for a local small business. The class was divided into groups of 4 or 5 people. My groups project was for a local not-for-profit organization. The organization provided eye glasses for the needy.

My team build the website at GeoCities. The entire site was only about 5, maybe 8 pages but it served its purpose.

I'am sad to see a site like GeoCities go down. Besides the spam, it has served the internet community well. Who knows how many small businesses and not-for-profit organizations used GeoCities to host their sites.
