It depends a lot on the position of the ads but around 3-4 blocks in total would be fine. :)

In My opinion 2-3 Ad units + 1-2 Link units...

Remember you can put maximum 3 of each that is total 6, but 6 units will give you good results only if your pages are quite long and ads placed long apart...

Actually the less ads, the better, as visitors dont like to see ads being stuffed in their face. I usually put at maximum 2 ad units + 1 link unit where applicable. Works well this way.

Putting a single adblock in a single page on a place where you get the most of the clicks is the best.

I personally like to use ad units [336*280 and 250*250]. The best number of ad units per page however depends on the available space, page design, amount of content etc. I think there is no specific best number of ad units for all sites: every site will have its own value for that.

I suggest you try to use different ad units and different ad placements and different number of ad units, and see which one gives the best results.

Max ad units per page =3
Max link units per page =3

I would not recommend using more than 2 ad units on any given page.

There is no correct answer. However more is not always better. Your best bet is to track and test.

Why is more not usually better? Here's 2 reasons why:

    - Having 3 ad blocks on your pages means you are displaying more low paying ads
    - Your site can seem spammy to visitors and to search engines

It depends on your page's layout, but definitely you want to maximize your adsense earnings.

I thinks adsense made a limit of 3 blocks. Based on my experience putting 4 or more adsense ads on a page but it still 3 ad blocks that show up
