How much to charge for banner placement

    Hi,

Can someone give me some idea's on how much to charge for a banner on a site that gets about 100k to 200k views per day (not unique, unique might be a half of that). There is only 1 banner slot (125x125, static), so there would only be that advertisers banner and no other advertising for that day. The site is a games related one.

    Any advice appreciated!

Hello, there are alot of factors that go into this.

Now, you have already answered one that it gets 100-200k views a day. Now, the next thing we would need to know is, what type of niche is your site? Are you going to be offering the banner slot to any niche or just target specific niches?

Next thing is this, is the advertisement going to be viewed on ALL pages or just the home page?

These things are very important and would need to know these answers before I can give you a good estimate of what we would charge someone.

The slot will be open to anyone apart from adult/offensive related material. The site itself would be online games related. The ad will only be on the front page, although it will actually be the only advertising on the site anyway. Any rough figures would be good :)

It would be a flat day rate, payable in advance. They would get whatever the impressions/clicks were for that day for the flat rate. I just want some rough idea of what to charge for the flat rate :)

    Hi flashculture,

This is what I usually do for static banners and so far it makes sense and is easy.

    1. I add the total pixel width and height space used (125x125 = 250 total space used)
    2. I then divide that total by 24 to get my daily monetary value and round up or down depending on total. (250 / 24 = 10.41 repeating 6. Rounded up to 11.00 even. )
    3. I then use a sequential multiplier value based on daily page views starting at 200,000 on up. The values are listed below:

I find the corresponding SMV value and multiple the total daily amount (rounded up or down) from step 2 by this number. (11 * 2 for 200,000 = 22.00)

So the end result would be $22.00 a day for a 125x125 static ad on a page that receives 200,000k views a day.

If you want weekly, monthly and yearly totals in the event you want to sell ad space on a weekly, monhtly or yearly basis, then just multiple the total in step 3 like so:

Of course you can modify to suit your needs but this is just my basic formula for quick calculating.
    I hope this helps :)

yeah that's cool thanks :).....that's 200k views of the ad, and not uniques right? also doesn't it add value to the advertiser (and hence can charge more) if they are the only advertiser on that particular day?

I was hoping to get some real world example figures as well from anyone?

or you could just make it up depending on how much u want to make? also try not to be greedy about it and as long as u av some sort of income from it any amount can do!

id say charge a months subscriptions, if u gettin that much hits on ur site maybe $500 a month or something :/

how much does demographics play into it? Is demographics more important then large numbers of ad impressions? I've noticed that some sites, such as sports sites charge relatively a lot for a small amount of ad impressions.

I think you'd also benefit by offering discounts if they purchase in weekly or monthly blocks. Less hassle for you means a savings to them! Even tho they may not be PPC ads, maybe you could perform some tests by yourself or with smaller companies to get a feel for how many clicks an advertiser might end up getting?

Just a couple ideas.. congrats on your traffic, tho! :)

It depends on alot of things. You said your getting 100K views a day and the uniques might be half that. Are you positive? That means that for every person that visited your site, they would only go to around 2 pages before they left.

So clicks are the most important aspect or the page views? (I know that might be obvious but just wanted to check!), so if you had a CTR of say 10% then you could charge more for your flat rate?
