Why is PHP so... unglamorous?

I've been looking around the net the past couple of days trying to find some decent, top quality tutorials and articles related to PHP and I've noticed something.

    PHP seems so boring.

I've been a PHP developer for many years now and love using it, I wouldn't use anything else. I wanted to compile a list of the best PHP tutorials I could find but they are few and far between.

Yes there are plenty of tutorials out there, but if you look at tutorials related to other languages and technologies (javascript/photoshop/flash) for example, they are just poor.

I know things like Javascript and Photoshop do things that are shinier, they do cool things and achieve great looking results. But there's no reason PHP tutorials can't be done in a similar fashion - it's not just about the end results! Very few that I found were well written, had lots of clear examples, even downloadable code. Few interesting or inviting titles.

In my opinion - it's time to sex PHP up! There's no reason why it can't be!

And please, if I've missed the ball on this one and you know of so really good PHP stuff I may have missed do let me know :D

I've got to agree with you, i've recently been looking at IPN tutorials for PHP, and they look so unglamourous.... i ended up self teaching from a book, and watched a few youtube videos... look for a guy called lifegoeson666 (if he still exists) on youtube. I used to watch his tutorials

    I mean it's just a programming language.

What's "sexy" about that? This isn't HTML or CSS... lol

Yes I do agree with you. But nowadays PHP is getting stronger as it is now having lot of CMS and frameworks to work with. And working in these new technologies is very exciting, especially for me.

That's easy. Just add several lines into your php.ini:

+1 to OP ! I've been using it for a few years now and finally I've found myself being too border when creating a new app :(
I'll say, let it go ( though, don't forget it ) and move one with something newer !

I think the main reason why Php tutorials are poor is that it's hard to explain a cool php script because you use alot of variables, notations - a huge tutorial it's not cool........ :( i use w w w . p h p . n et to get examples...

It is boring to watch, but the results can be pretty cool if you do really complex stuff like making online games with it.

it's probably down to the fact that since most if not all people learn php or any other program by rote, no-one has much time to be bothered writing a tutorial :p

PHP is not boring. I'm currently making a script to rephrase a paragraph and it is incredible what you can do to manipulate strings, data, files, images, and more.

PHP is code of choice by far!

You'ld have a better chance getting people to think Chess club was sexy.

PHP is basically just advanced math.

    It's just PHP.... :)

Even though I've been working with it for the past 5 years I have difficulty finding any scripting language sexy... In fact, it's more like a stale old marriage...

    Here is my PHP helper.

I like the site tizag.com for tutorials.. Even though the tuts are not displayed in glamorous way, they are well written and somewhat detailed with steps to work along through.

    PHP RULES!

    PeaceOut,
