My opinion is, that free directories do not play any role in web promotion in Google. Reason is that all links from free directories have O weight for Google.
    Am I right?

    Well.......

I have to disagree with you, free Directories work just fine in terms of SERPs.

I have been promoting a couple of websites mainly by free directory submissions and both rank highly for the keywords I was aiming for.

Most large SEO firms use free directories as part of their promotion techniques, the key is to use various methods and not to rely on free directories.

All the rubbish that said about Directories has really made it easier to gain higher rankings as many sites are reluctant to use them.

    Thanks Brian

These days, links from directories may be devalued by Google, however, they do have some value still.
Submitting to directories is good start for every new site.
    Just my 2 cents.

How about DMOZ and Yahoo directories are they still good backlinks or has Google devalued them as well?
They used to say submit to them in Google webmasters help but the suggestion seams to have been removed now.

@Wolf09: I don't agree with your viewpoint. Directories (even the free ones) are still a useful step for SEO. I am a heavy directory submitter and I see benefits from directory submission.

So if Google gives 0 weight to free how much do they give to paid..is it on a sliding scale depending on the review price?

Better yet, how much weight do they give to DMOZ which is free compared to Yahoo which is paid and where does Google's own free DMOZ clone fit it on the Weight-o-Meter.

free directories take time to accept your link in directories, so w8 for some time and then u can see good results,

its also depend on directory quality and pr. many directories is not seo frndlly and can injure your ranking too. :)

I stay away from free directories. If anyone can submit a link, then Google won't value the site/link very high. The more difficult it is to aquire a link, the more valuable it is.

Great for niche. Just don't make it your only source of link building. Also remember to change link text and description up.

Depends on the weight that Google puts on the particular directory... Submiting to junk directories = bad idea since most of them are associated with spam - solely made for the loads of "SEO experts"out there...

Actually your wrong, it depends in the directory you submit to, if its a quality one you will gain a quality back link and will help your website in serps results, if it is not then you wont gain quality back links and thus wont help your website in serps.
