Is this term too competitive?

I'm trying to target a term with a new site of mine. I'm not going to give out the actual term, but I can tell you it's 3 words long.

My domain IS THE TERM (it's exactly keyphrase.com). The term gets approximately 2,000 searches/month on Google. It has 82,000,000 results WITHOUT quotes, but only 32,000 WITH quotes.

Most of the sites ranking high for the term without quotes are barely related, and don't have the key phrase in the domain or meta description.

Am I too ambitious? Should I even compete for this term?

My site will be fairly simple. Probably 1 or two pages. But I know off-page SEO and I'll be doing a fair amount of work on it.

    Opinions?

I gave you plenty of info. The term is not important - just the numbers.

But thanks for the useless post. It's appreciated.

Well, if we know what the term is we can look more into it, but I guess a lot of people would go through a lot to protect them selves.

Well, I believe so, if you know there is little to no competition you can rank well for the term. Just remember to be 100% sure or else all that optimizing will go to waste.

    Is the 2000 exact searches?

It should be relatively easy if you know off site seo like you say and that your domain is the keyphrase.

So YES, you can do it.

find out ages of domains on the front page, find out PR(sometime you can blow past this), use web 2.0 for your back links.. digg your site with a keyword rich post title and description.. beating out 32,000 isnt impossible but it will require more work than 10K-20K in quotes(still even this level can be difficult to crack based on whos already there) below 10K, easy peasy.. use a squidoo page or hubpage to crack number 1, through some high authority backlinks at it.. goods to go..

better yet, sounds like your site is small, create a folder off of your root domain, so xxx.youdomain.com/blog, installed wordpress.org into that folder, find the plugins through google that post content automatically for you related to your website, link those posts to your home page, make sure your post titles are keyword rich, ive done this alot and get my homepage to rank for my main keyword with 30K + competition while wordpress is running behind the scenes, do your research on plugins to leverage the power of wordpress.. :)

It is difficult to say without knowing the keyword, but I think you should give it a try.

It isn't that difficult, and even if you don't succeed, the experience you would have gained will stand you in good stead.

If you managed to buy the 3 exact keywords domain and it is a .com than probably it isn't too competitive. Just by owning the domain you have a great advantage over your competitors and some good on site optimization and proper link building should get you in the top ten in a few months.

Just check how many backlinks the top 10 SERPs have and see who is linking to them and how can you get similar or better links. If most of the backlinks are from directories or generic non keyword related sites than probably the keyword isn't too competitive, but if the top 10 results have thousands of backlinks from related relevant websites than you might have to put more work into it than you think.

In selecting a keyword it's not important how many words are in a keyword. The quantity of searches and ratio of keyword in title/keyword on the page matters.

What are the pr and backlink and age of the top sites for your kw? That will help you decide if it's tough or not. If you are facing a bunch of pr 4, 5, 6 then it will be a long uphill battle, but if all of the top sites are pr 0, 1, 2 with few backlinks then it should be no problems.

2,000 search volume montly is peanuts
and getting ranked for 1st or 2nd page results out of 32,000 shouldn't be that hard
many consumers do not even enter quotes for their keywords

If you know and good on off-page seo, then why you worry. For 2k monthly searches on 82million results, I guess it won't be hard for you to get it on first page.

2000 monthly searches, top ranking sites not having KW in the domain or description usually means the term is not competitive so should not be hard to get ranked for. however, not possible to say for sure without the actual term as there are few other things involved in analyzing competition

who knows what you can do.

Quotes return an exact match for a phrase.

Just because a phrase appears on a page doesn't mean that page is doing anything at all to try and "rank" for the phrase.
