What kind of role do keywords in a domain name play on the ranking of that site in a search engine? Thanks.
It certainly helps to have your main keyword in the domain name. Check the SERP in your niche and you will see what I'm talking about. An old .com domain with perfect match for your keyword makes everything so much easier. However in some niches a brandable domain is a better idea.
I've got sites that rank #1 for their main keyword without having it in the domain. However, it is soooo much easier to rank #1 if your keywords are in the domain name. There are a couple of reasons for this. 1. You get a little boost from the search engine algorithm 2. You get a huge boost when someone links back to your site naturally because they almost always use some form of your domain name as the anchor text. For example, one of my branded sites that doesn't contain keywords in the domain has hundreds of links back to the home page with my brand. That's a lot of wasted link juice.
It helps a little, and also take into account that people are more likely to link to you using that keyword if it's in your URL, which will help too.
It actuly help a lot. there is already lots of discussion happened here on DP. use the search feature to find
I would not totally disagree that keyword in a domain name does help but it is not the only thing to get the rankings. You can always outrank these domains if these are only there on the basis of keyword in a domain. for example, if you have hypheated domain with quality backlinks and unique content, you can very much outrank keyword rich domain.
