I just got done with about 3 months of trying to help a "friend". Someone I have known for many years, and just can't afford my services.

After getting help from me for just about free, he decided to only implement ONE QUARTER of what I coached him on, and allowed his children (all under 23) to convince him to leave his business the way it is.

WHAT A WASTE OF MY TIME!!!!

Now imagine, a business that is struggling...knows it needs help, but is afraid to step out of the comfort zone.

Of course he is "looking for money" but fails to realize he is mismanaging the money he is generating (I have seen the books). He has something more valuable than a lump sum...he has cash flow.

But has bad/no credit and is in trouble with the government for various issues. He won't set budgets, deposit money, track inventory and spends cash like crazy. Yet is underpaying the best employees, and overpaying the worst (his kids)

I hate to say it, but this is one of the reasons coaches do NOT give free/discounted advice.

For whatever reason, the people who can't afford to pay are always seem to be looking for shortcuts and just don't appreciate free help.

Sadly, I believe he is about to get a nice lump sum investment of around 50k or so...which will be great for maybe 3-6 months for him, and then he will be back in the same situation.

A very good post...a very honest assessment of how to make it online. It is quite refreshing to read an honest post here in DP and not trying to sell crap guides...

    I salute you!

    Hi there BusinessCoach,

It's great of you to provide free advice here. I've given you some rep :)

I have a question I hope you don't mind answering:

When writing a plan, how specific should one be? If a business has many goals, should the plan outline then all, the absolute ultimate achievement or should a new plan be written per every "step"?

For example, would a plan to "create a more flexible and compact piece of software" be better than "create a piece of software to become dominant in a particular market"?

    Thanks,
    Lee.

    THanks for the rep.

In answer to your question, there is no hard and fast rule.

Depends on your PURPOSE for the plan.

Is it for you? your employees? a bank? investors?

you might need to state its flexible and compact, or that its to become dominant in a particular market, or neither.

More importantly than WHAT in a plan is always the HOW.

Thats what a plan is...a map, a blueprint, a guide. Not simply a place to organize ideas for a concept.

what technology makes it flexible? compact? how will it dominate the market? who is the market leader? what are their resources? strategy? how will you over come that being new with no track record? what happens when the competition fights back to hold their position to dominate the market? what happens when they put out their own version? is there a way to stop it? is there an existing customer base? how much money do you have? how much do you need? how exactly will it be spent? who on the team has the experience to make it flexible? who can make it compact? who can take it to lead position in the market place?

IMO telling how, is 100x more effective than telling what in any business plan, irrespective of who the target audience of the plan is.

You would think that number 4 is the most commonly implemented...unfortunately it isn't.

too many people who are "selling shovels" yet have never dug for gold themselves.

Thanks for sharing this info, that is very helpful. I definitely agree with all 4, especially the business plan and most importantly Integrity. Whether you're religious or not most people agree there is such thing as karma and businesses that use integrity always last longer and are more successful then those who sacrifice ethics for quick sales.

Thank you, and some of us ARE religious. Those of us who are Christians do not believe in Karma, but we do believe that one reaps what he sows AND God is a Judge of the Planet.

Either way, its a fact, whatever you do, good or bad, especially to another human, comes back at you many fold!

Another self promotion thread. He says you need a Coach/Mentor and it just so happens that he is a Business Coach.

    How cleaver is that?

I often wonder if any of these forums are useful? Does anyone really get help? Or do you just get sales pitches?

If you had read the whole thread, you would have noticed that it is far from self-promotion.

thanks for clarifying that on my behalf....some people can not be satisfied, and many see problems where there are none.

Sadly, as good as the info is (and free), there will always be an excuse or another to NOT take it to heart.

If they can somehow make it seem like its anything other than what it truly is, they can justify not following the tips.

I have yet to meet ONE person since 1992 who did all of the steps and came back and said

"this sucks! it doesn't work like you said it would!"

thanks again brum, rep to you
