England is a country that is part of the UK

England - The capital is London.
Scotland - The capital is Edinburgh .
Wales - The capital is Cardiff.
Northern Ireland - The capital is Belfast.

The official name of the UK is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

    Great Britain refers to just-

England - The capital is London.
Scotland - The capital is Edinburgh .
Wales - The capital is Cardiff.

In simple terms the individual countries are often referred to collectively as a region

Hope that helps. It all stems from historical changes that I will not bore you with.

I am glad to be of assistance. Some people get too worried about whether they are called English or British. I know some Scots dislike being called British. In reality it is not that big an issue, call me English, British or a member of the UK, its not a problem.

At the end of the day we are basically covered by the same government and the same laws. There are some exceptions to this though but again its not that interesting to trouble you with. :)

This is not correct, Sundar: Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain. It's part of the United Kingdom. Technically, the term "Great Britain" is a geographical description, not a political one.

Correct- see the original reply. GB does not include NI, UK does.

If in doubt just use GB, or Great Britain or simply ask where the heck someone comes from :)
