Blog vs CMS for SEO

I'm putting a new site together that will basically be very content driven website on science and related stories. I'm wondering what everyones opinion is on the benefits or drawbacks of doing this as a blog vs the benefits of doing this via a cms.

My thinking is that blog posts will get archived away and get less PR and traffic going forward but will probably have an advantage in terms of current stories and will rank well for new posts. So the blog will do well on new stories but the CMS option would give me greater traffic over time as the content built up and caught more long tail searches. Does everyone agree with this view? or is there a way to make your blog archive material in such a way as to still be SEO friendly for the old material and still get the full benefit of all the old content?

I've had plenty of experience using both, and one thing I'll say is that search engines really seem to like Wordpress sites. Checkout purevisibility.com, a very good SEO company, who have built their corporate site on Wordpress.

Definitely I would vote for blog. Search engines seem to love blogs more for one or more reasons.

Isn't blog just a type of CMS application?
Just make sure your CMS (e.g. your blog) is probably on-page search engine optimized, such as search engine friendly URLs for your content...etc.

I would also go with a blog. Many CMS have issues with unique title and meta tags.

blog and CMS are the same thing. blog is the front end where CMS is the backend. to run a blog, you will need a CMS or Content Management System. for example, you can run a blog on wordpress, drupal, joomla which are CMS

Blogs are just basic CMS's. It just depends which CMS you are using. Wordpress has good SEO options, however, there are plugins for other CMS's which allow more SEO support.

The difference between a CMS and a Blog is the ususaly CMS has many more features: forums, blogs, calendars, various content types etc.. whereas blog are mainly for content and embeded content (though some people take a blog platform and develope it into a full featured CMS). another difference is that ususaly, CMS have pretty steep learning curves (Joomla, Drupal etc..) and are not meant for the casual user.

As far as SEO goes, it realy doesnt matter: keep your titles relevant, your URL sef and build some quality incoming links (the tricky part) for your main keywords and phrases. All these are much easier to do with Wordpress then with Joomla (the most widely used Blog and CMS)

Interesting opinions I was really expecting the consensus to be that a CMS would be better. My concern with a blog is that older information gets archived off and becomes less accessible, although I've since realised that the nav can be rearranged with a plugin so that can be overcome as well. Sounds like wordpress is the way forward :)

That made me laugh seeing the expert SEO link for your sig.

Blogs are a type of CMS software - CMS = content management system

I would say Wordpress is by far and away the best as well. I think it is very SEO friendly both in terms of Ranking and actually optimising the site (it has great plug ins on there)

    Hope it helps.

To me there is a difference between a blog and a CMS... Big difference... You are not comparing apples to apples. Blogs are sometimes built on CMSs. So are traditional web sites, forums, wikis... but they don't HAVE to be.

Blogs are 'supposed' to be an online diary. They are supposed to the thoughts from a single person recorded as posts. Blogs even have a particular way of structuring content on the web site itself. The home page of a blog typically contains the most recent posts by the blogger ordered from most recent to least recent. At some point a post which has been on the home page for a while is automatically archived and disappears from the home page.

This is a VERY different paradigm from how traditional sites are built and how their content is maintained. A CMS is not required for a blog anymore than a CMS is required for a traditional site. Yes... Having a CMS definitely makes the management of a blog and a traditional web site much easier. But it's not required.

The difference between what's a blog and what's a traditional web site and what's a forum and what's a wiki is distinguished more by who generates and/or manages the content, how the content is organized and found, and the formats that they are presented in. All of these can be implemented w/ a CMS... But all can also be implemented in code using scripting languages and NOT use a CMS.

CMSs are awesome for any type of site where you are managing a lot of content and simple ones are good for even tiny sites. But sites have been getting by without them for years...

They way wordpress is used these days, it is now being used a CMS option...

Things like joomla and drupal are true CMS's but it does not matter to be honest I feel..

I build sites in joomla and wordpress and both can be indexed very quickly and gain high serp rankings... its all bout what you want to achieve...

I still think joomla has far more capabilities then wordpress.. but that is me...

Nothing beats playing around with these platforms until you find what works for you.. there is not one better then other... it just depends on what you like working with... IMO

The laugh was at the word "expert" and was meant in fun. I know that even the experts don't know everything in their field. If I claimed to be an expert SEO and asked what Google PR was - wouldn't you laugh?
