5 Common Mistakes on Weight Loss Affiliate Sites

    Hi Guys,

Following up on my recent post: http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=1298989

Here are 5 common mistakes made on weight loss sites:

    Biased 'One Product Sell'

Only promoting one product and using the products branding on your site. This makes you look incredibly biased and negatively effects your conversion rate. Your site should be branded as your own - not as the product. Additionally any copy should sound independent so do not simply take it from the product site without rewriting it.

Far better to create a completely independent site that even avoids banners for the products you review. This will gain trust and credibility and boost the conversion rate of your reviews.

The only time a site can work with similar branding to the product is when it is a personal 'This product worked so well for me I wanted to tell the world' type site. Even then, you still have to be careful that your site doesn't look like you are getting paid to endorse the product.

Not Picking up the Latest Craze Products

Now, Im not going to suggest that you start promoting every product under the sun. I have seen this work but good money can be made just promoting a few products. However, what you should do is monitor the marketplace and media and look out for the next big weight loss thing.

It could be a new product, a diet or a food/recipe - whatever it is make sure you add an article about it on your site even if you are not promoting it. This will help you pick up some extra traffic from search engines whilst also showing your surfers you are on the ball and in touch with what is happening.

    Not Making a Clear Recommendation

Why do you think people visit your site? They want information and help in making a decision. If you show them 5 products which are all the best things since sliced bread how are you helping them make a decision? You are just confusing them more and giving them too many options.

You should recommend more than one product (it helps you look independent), however, you should make it very clear which single one product is the best and then present alternatives if for some reason they dont like your main recommendation.

    Not Capturing Email Addresses

The power of list building can NOT be underestimated. I strongly encourage every affiliate to place a good email capture on their sites. There are many good reasons for doing this.

If you setup a good autoresponder chain then the surfers you capture will revisit your site time and time again. This gives you more traffic and more opportunities to convert them in to commissions.

A good list also allows you to increase your credibility and trust with the surfer which directly increases your conversion. It also gives you extra security knowing you have a good list in case anything goes wrong with your current traffic sources (e.g. Google gives you a penalty).

    Not Understanding your Surfers

How much do you know about your surfers? If you have an Analytics program installed then yes you may know what country they are from, what browser they use, their screen resolution, etc. But....what do you actually know about them?

Are they mostly male or female? How old are they? What are they are trying to achieve? Why do they want to achieve that? And so on.

If you have the answers to these questions then you could probably convert at 1/3 or better. However how do you find it out?

Well, you can never be 100% sure or make a site that suits 100% of your visitors - however, you can take a big step towards doing it.

Create a survey to find out who your surfers are and what they want and need in life. Test out different ideas (use Googles Web Optimizer where possible) and track to see which produces the best results. Slowly you will build up a picture of your average surfer and you will be able to ensure you site appeals to them individually.

An average weight loss surfer is usually female, around 30-50 years old, looking to lose a few pounds because they want to feel better about their body and feel more confident. However, your surfers may not be average so find out as much as you can about them.

Useful tips, thanks a lot, although Proactol is not the latest addition on the weight loss market. moreniche offers Proactol for some time already, a couple years actually.

Are not these diet pills dangerous to health? I have a weight loss website but usually stay away from promoting them.

Absolutely not, there are no known side effects from either UniqueHoodia or Proactol. Hit me up with your website addy and Ill look at how you could implement the two on your site :)
